Hot Dogs & Sausages

Recommended Posts

Since we are SMACK DAB in the middle of summer- has anyone tried a hot dog or sausage that was (relatively) good nutritional content and that didnt gross you out?

I go to lots of BBQ's and always bring a package of wieners or sausages (running gag) and kinda need to find one that I can enjoy.

I have found the only hot dog I can eat w/o being queesy is a Hebrew National. I also do fine with the chicken sausages you get at Costco/Whole Foods (but they are gross).

Looking for a bit of variety. What ones can you recommend?

I hope you get some good answers to this one.

I personally hate hot dogs, but for the last month I would give my left leg to have one. My wife did preop diet with me... except for the time I drove past 7eleven and saw her inhaling a hot dog!! Now it's stuck in my brain.

I ate a Nathan's dog july 4th and it was ok. It agreed with me and I could only eat less that half the dog! That was only 98 calories. Yayyyyy! :) I find that I really am not crazy about bread! :)

I think maybe method of preparation could be a factor, I do okay with grilled dogs but not dogs fried on a flat top or boiled. A regular sized dog ran through the garden Chicago-style but without the bun, I can eat half, then the other half 30 minutes later. Nathan's are good, as are Hebrew National and Boarshead light.

Love me some Butterball Turkey Polska Kielbasas! A good bit of salt as expected, but not as high on calories as hot dogs or regular brats. Also they are really low in fat and have about 25 grams of Protein each. I usually eat them on a fork with a little mustard.

Have you tried any of the turkey sausage links? I know wal-mart carries them in different flavors and they have lower fat than beef or pork.

I'm only 9 days post-op and was sad that I couldn't have a Hebrew national grilled hot dog w/saur kraute & spicy mustard for 4th of July. lol looking forward to when I can :)

Cheap hot dogs are most lip, glands and ... I won't go there. I eat the Hebrew National fat free kind. I like them. If I go in for full fat I will eat a Nathans snap dog (with the casing).

I am a fan of Italian sausage. It's not very lean, but since our neighborhood Italian market grinds their own, i know what's in it. I like the hot kind.

For the bun I will slice one half of one longways and eat it open face with a tiny bit of chili, onions and or mustard. Mmmmmm, spicy mustard. I try to get healthier Buns or bread for them.

Good LORD! Never get a hot dog from 7-11. My husband was desperate. There were 3 hot dogs on the grill and he got one of them. He went in two days later and there were still two hot dogs on that grill machine thing.

They may have been the same dogs or not. We will never know.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
