sugar-free doesn't mean it's calorie-free! And probably filled with sugar gylcols which are not good for you in large quantities. One or two bites/licks is probably okay, but I wouldn't buy a carton of it and keep it in my freezer..........too tempting!

Much more importantly, ice cream (even sugar-free) has strong potential to be a "slider" food which can become a self-sabotaging device for you now and later on. You can eat larger quantities of it without feeling the restriction your sleeve is designed to provide.

Finally, this is the best time for you to develop your good eating habits that you must have to succeed long term. If you can, try to avoid temptations from your "pre-sleeve" life until you are much further into your food stages and weight loss. By then you will have the great habits that will sustain you long term and you can, on rare occasions, partake in a small indulgence such as ice cream, etc.

Not gospel, just my 2 cents worth. Good luck in your early steps. It does get better once you're on mushies.......hang in there!

Dryers has a surgar free popcicle that I found to be great. Does not taste sugar free at all. Walmart usually has it on sale 2 for $7. Braums also has a sugar free light yogurt that is great.

oh it was just going to be social. i wasn't going to buy a gallon and keep it. i never really bought ice cream and kept it prior to my sleeve but i would get it from time to time. i was just going to get some with a friend and get a very small serving of the sugar free flavor they had.

on another note, i cant find sugar free yogurt anywhere where im at.

I have been pondering the same thing about SF or no sugar added ice cream. I'm on purees so I'm sure I could "stomach" it. I never kept ice cream in the house much either and was thinking of it as a social thing. I'm not "out" to a ton of friends but I was thinking about conveniently suggesting getting ice cream instead of beer or food. I was just brainstorming creative options to get around the whole explaining thing. Plus, with the heat wave in the midwest right now, I'm sure I'm not the only one liking the sound of ice cream or froyo!

make your own using eggface's recipe. high Protein low/no sugar or fats. it is really delicious. best snack ever !!!

Ice cream is defiantly a slider food so be very careful if you have any!

I saw eggface's recipe but she calls for an ice cream maker... has anyone else made her Protein ice cream using more common kitchen tools? I live in an apartment and barely have room (or money) for the magic bullet I just got! But Protein ice cream sounds wonderful!

My aunt was banded with my DR 3 years ago and has definitely warned me about ice cream being a slider food! Maybe it's a good thing dairy doesn't always agree with me. lol

You can google many ideas on a homemade icecream maker if your strapped for cash.

I bought a nice Cuisinart one on Craigslist for $30 and have been making the egg face Protein ice-cream flavors.

Very yummy but I make it with 1% instead of non-fat cause it isn't rock hard then. I also only make it to soft-serve consistency and it's so freakin yummy!!!

Certainly worth the $ to pick one up used.... They are always listed on CL for cheap.

I had sorbet very early out, maybe 3 weeks. I was out with the fam and they went to a Haagen Dazs (sp?) shop so I got a kids size of the Blackberry Sorbet. It settled fine with Hamilton (my sleeve).

I have a bookmark from a lady on OH who makes protein ice cream with zip lock bags, I will copy and paste what she wrote (Not sure if we're able to post other forums here or not) I have never tried this, but I think I will, sounds very easy!

What you need:

Materials

  • 1/2 cup milk or half and half (WLS friendly use Skim milk or FF half and half)
  • 1/2 cup whipping cream (heavy cream) (WLS SKIP or USE FF COOL WHIP)
  • 1/4 cup sugar (WLS REPLACE WITH SPLENDA OR STEVIA OR SWEETENER TO TASTE)
  • For WLS version add 1 scoop of whey vanilla protein or whatever flavor you are working with...
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla or vanilla flavoring (vanillin)
  • 1/2 to 3/4 cup table salt or rock salt (Table Salt is what I use)
  • 2 cups ice
  • 1-QUART ZiplocTM bag
  • 1-GALLON ZiplocTM bag

Another version that is simpler....

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup milk (skim or FF for WLS friendly version)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons sugar or splenda/stevia or sweetener of choice (or to taste)
  • 6 tablespoons table salt....

Preparation: Put milk, vanilla and sugar (Splenda) and Whipping Cream into a pint or quart-sized freezer bag. Seal well.

Fill a large, gallon-sized freezer bag with ice. Add the salt. (Rock or table salt okay)

Put the smaller bag into the larger bag and seal.

shake and mix until the ice cream thickens, about 10 minutes. You can also let the kids gently throw the bag back and forth to help mix the ice cream. The bag gets very cold, so you might want to use towels to hold it.

Your kids or YOU or our family/friends will enjoy making, and eating, this ice cream made in a ziplock bag. Prep Time: 15 minutes Total Time: 15 minutes

She said if you want it like stiff ice cream out the freezer then put it in the freezer for a few, but of you want it kinda like soft serve it should be fine out of the bag. I think I will try it sometime this week.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
