VACookey 111 Posted July 5, 2012 I was just telling my husband that I want sushi but I'm scared to try the rolls because of the rice. I'm 4 months out and I'm still not ready. So I'm curious how many people can tolerate rice, even a little bit, and how far out you are. Ultimately, I guess my question is: will I ever be able to enjoy a small portion of sushi again? 7carol3 212 Posted July 5, 2012 I'm 7 1/2 months out and I can eat a couple of tablespoons of rice without any problems. I could probably eat more I just want to make sure I have room for my Protein. I guess with sushi you would wrap it all in one.
vsginnj 415 Posted July 5, 2012 I nervously tried sushi w/less rice at 4 months went ok. Now 7 months out I can eat appx 4-5 pcs.(our place makes them small), word of warning, the"nori"green seaweed papery kinda green fruit roll upish stuff was more challenging than rice. Katie713 423 Posted July 5, 2012 At my local sushi place I order a Kappa Maki - cucumber roll made without the Nori (seaweed) or rice. The roll is wrapped in cucumber and filled with 3 kinds of fish or spicy tuna with a lovely soy based sauce. No carbs, tastes wonderful and lots of Protein. I also loved baked mussles which are often served as an appetizer in sushi places, and maybe a few sips of miso Soup. I'm going out tomorrow for sushi with my god-daughter, can't wait to relax and enjoy the evening. Another time when I went I was able to eat a couple pieces of a regular roll with the Nori and rice and it didn't bother me at all. I just prefer to do the lower carb version while I am still working off the pounds : )
VACookey 111 Posted July 5, 2012 ahhhh, good to know. So maybe I'm just being a pansy yet again by not even trying.
Webchickadee 716 Posted July 5, 2012 I love sashimi (sushi without rice!). Really it's just pieces of raw fish, but very very high grade fish. It's my favourite! I've been eating sashimi for weeks now (and I'm only 8 weeks post-op). With a bit of sashimi soy sauce and some wasabi. Yum! A great way to get your Protein in. If you like sushi, you could give sashimi a try.......
hellonurse 76 Posted July 5, 2012 Oops, I guess Im a bad girl!! I'm 2 1/2 months post op, I had sashimi( only 2 pieces) but rice and all. It didn't disagree with me. Pookeyism 1,143 Posted July 5, 2012 I kinda can, but really prefer not to...My fav sushi place makes me this kinda thingy, Nina calls it "deconstructed roll" its just all of my fav bits layered and molded pleasantly with my sauces on the side...almost total protien, so a little goes a long way. JDHenin 165 Posted July 5, 2012 I love sushi. I am 3 months post and I can handle it fine. I eat it very seldom because I'm trying to stay away from the carbs as mich as possible. But when I need my sushi fix I go and get it! I can eat like 4 pcs of a roll in one meal.
Meli01 53 Posted July 5, 2012 I tried sushi at about 3 months out and didn't have any problems. I was only able to eat a couple pieces before I got full, but the rice didn't bother me at all.

Momoslim 6 Posted July 6, 2012 Rice is the easiest thing of all to go slip down!i m 2 years and out and I never had any trouble with the rice.i can barely eat 2-3 tbsp but that's fine...I m okay with the portion size as long as I m enjoying every thing I want to eat.
