How Do You Get Enough Nutrition Post-Surgery?

Recommended Posts

Hi all.

I'm very new to this site, and new to the idea of the gastric sleeve. in reading about the reduced size of the stomach, and the really small amounts most people can eat at one time, I wonder how easy it is to maintain a healthy diet.

Does anyone ever have trouble with the nutrition side of things? Are supplements required post-surgery?

Thanks in advance.

People do experience issues but they tend to be able to address them. Earlier stages are harder than later stages, and lack of nutrition can be compensated by taking it easy and letting your nutritional needs come before exercise. You don't start exercising until you are eating enough to sustain your body and the many, many needs your body has for the nutrition that is amplified while working out.

I see alot of people jumping into the exercise while they are still on earlier stages of food, and are aware they are not getting thier protien needs...it isn't the best thing to do.

your post should generate a lot of responses and if not "search" your topic...

When you go into it most places have very specific guidelines and classes to address how much to drink, eat and take supplementally to be healthy.

The problem I think is when people don't adhere to the rules. There are books given out to the patients of each kind of surgery at a bariatric center that address the guidelines from pre-op and through each stage of liquids and through solid foods with timelines for eating specific foods.

The general rules in the beginning are Protein first, sip Water (never during drinking during meals), try things with many bites a little at a time and actually some more- (you can read more about it in the pre-op section here). You do take supplements in the beginning since it's such low calories.
