Insurance Requires Weight Watchers?

Recommended Posts

Reading my insurance requiremens, besides a co-morbidity, I need to have been involved in weight watchers or Jenny Craig for atleast 6 months. Has anyone else come across this requirement? How do I prove this? What if I didn't loose while on it or loose too much to make me below 35 BMI?

At this point I'm ready to sell my vehicle, buy a cheaper one and fly to Mexico tomorrow (if I didn't have to apply for a new passport). I have a feeling they're going to make me jump through hoops only to deny me in the end because I'm borderline 35 BMI and borderline diabetic. I have no idea about apnea but probably since I sound like a freight train

don't sweat it. i was freaking out looking for this answer.

i gave my wls coordinator my bank statement as proof. you can also give them your weighs in, weekly/monthly receipts, etc. it's that easy.

as far as losing...it doesn't matter if you lose or not...if it worked you wouldn't need the surgery so that shouldn't negatively affect you. it is important to not to gain a lot of weight during the approval process.

good luck to you!

i didn't keep receipts and paid in cash. guess they should have it computerized. I haven't been back in 2 months or so. maybe i can pay to "catch up". need to find my books. I didn't go weekly. will that be a problem? usually every other week for the last year.

You can call Weight Watchers Corporate. They will have your records of when you paid. Also, WW switched to keeping records on computers quite some time ago. You can go to your local center and get a printout of your weigh ins. As to the specific requirements of your insurance about whether you lost or gained weight, you should call them. Insurance companies vary. Even the rules within one insurance company can vary because an employer can have a say in the coverage you have. I hope that makes sense.

most approvals are based on the STRUGGLE of losing and keeping the weight off...so if you've gained weight BEFORE you've started the approval process is should not be a problem. again i would be more concerned with not gaining during the approval process because i have heard of surgeries being postponed due to weight gain = liver not shrinking.

yes WW should have your weigh ins and payment history. if i read correctly you have not been enrolled in a couple of months....RE-ENROLL IMMEDIATELY! i had stopped my WW membership in December 2011 and decided to have wls in March 2012...as soon as my coordinator found out she told me to re-enroll before my first visit with their office. I re-enrolled the that very day...i'm due to have my surgery this month!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
