I'm Confused And I Need Advice

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!

I had my sleeve done on June 6th - so far things have been going well so far. I'm getting into the rythem of getting my Vitamins and food, following what my nutritionist says for food, etc.

So yesterday, I had a meeting with my nutritionist and she said I was doing great - it looked like I was getting 60 grams of Protein a day, and said I could eat regular food now. Then I met with my Dr., and HE said that 60 grams of Protein was not enough, I needed 100g! I should be drinking 2 Protein shakes a day and everything else I eat is a bonus on protein. The more protein I get, the better my weightloss will be, etc.

WHAT??? I have one camp that says getting 60 -80 grams of protein a day is fine, use the shakes for Meal Replacements on busy days. Then another camp that is telling me that 100g of protein and I must drink the shakes.

Oh, and did I mention that the Protein Shakes are on the list of foods that make me nauseous? I don't like chocolate (yeah, yeah, I know, weird huh), and the nectar ones are nasty. The costco premier shakes are just, blech. I am trying to force one down now and I am getting more and more nauseous with every sip.

So what are your experiences? How much protein have you been required to take in and how has it helped/hindered your weight loss? What should I do?

Thanks!

There are vsg folks in my support group who have lost 150+ lbs, look like they have never weighed an ounce more than they should, and could not choke down their recommended Vitamins and Protein until 4-6 months out. When I feel like a failure for not getting in enough Protein, Vitamins, exercise, H2O, what have you - I remember their journies and spectacular success.

My nutritionist says 80 g for us - I dont think I have ever hit that - so I try to get anywhere from 40-60. which I can do with eating real food like chicken, turkey, eggs, and greek yogurt etc.. I cannot hit 80 unless I have protein shakes, and like you I can't stand the sweet taste - I gave away 6 tubs of nectar recently because I just can't stomach it post-surgery.

I have also become super sensitive to that manufactured protein smell - powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury chicken Soup and the unflavored whey Protein powder smells sickening to me these days so I am trying to get my nutrients from whole foods rather than through chemically altered, manufactured methods that come in a carton, jug, or bar :) I think not eating whole foods is one of the reasons I got so heavy in the first place (fast foods etc.)

I am just trying to take things one day at a time and be cognizant of my success thus far. Personally I would like to see the folks who recommend 100+ grams, have surgery and try it themselves lol - it certainly is a challenge. Maybe some day I will hit 80 grams - perhaps when I can eat more than 3-4 oz. at a time, but until then I will try for my 40-60.

My advice is to just do the best you can - you will be able to get more in as the months go by.

Take some of your favorite yogurt, 2-3 raw eggs washed well before cracking, mix with iced skim milk or frozen to get you a total of 6-8 ounces eat over 30 min-1hour. say the yogurt amt has 3-4 gr, the eggs have 6 gr each, milk amt 3-4 grs total ~18-25 grs each setting. add some artifical flavors ie banana, strawberry etc? Blend in magic bullet mixer. This is what we did in school while playing football, in larger quanties of course.

I know people talk of not eating raw eggs. I have eaten raw eggs and sunnyside up= semi to mostly raw centers my whole life without issue?? but one never knows.

I had stressed on this too, but then realized that I am going to just shoot for the Protein amount I was suppose to get, but reminded myself that it is just a goal and of course i wouldn't be able to hit that mark. I did finally get the goal amount but not until 7 to 8 months post op. It's a target # and you can only do what you can. Keep it up you are definitely Rockin that Sleeve. :)

I was just thinking - I couldn't even hit 100g before surgery and I was doing nothing but eating meat/protein and low carb. The only time I could reach that was with big steaks. I just try to listen to my body - some days I get all my Protein in but other days I really feel like I need to get a lot of Water in so I switch it up.

My NUT said 60-70g a day. I'm having a hard enough time getting in 20g with the nausea I've been having so I couldn't imagine 100g. There are a lot of options for Protein Shakes. I would seriously check out the World According to Eggface if you haven't already done so. She has some good shake recipes over there that might help give you some variety.

Thanks for the advice! You are right, I am not going to stress about it and keep going the way I am going by focusing on Protein with every meal. Tonight we had cracked crab for dinner (3 oz = 19g protein!). We're on vacation on the coast. I think I'm doing okay- the only thing I am really afraid of is my hair falling out. :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
