Calcium needs to be taken at least 2 hours after Iron and taken in no more than 500 mg. doses at a time at least 2 hours from the prior dose. My physician has told me that VSG patients need 1500 mg. of calcium a day. I usually take my multi when I'm getting ready in the morning. During the week while I'm at work, I take my calcium doses usually mid morning, lunch and mid afternoon. I hope this helps and this is what you were looking for.

Just don't take them at the same time you are taking your Iron. I usually take all my pills in the morning and calcium chews at night.

You know you can only absorb 500 mg. of Calcium at a time so you shouldn't take more than that in one dose? You should also wait at least 2 hours between doses or you risk not absorbing it all.

Sorry I was just giving the info I have from my doctor.

Meli01---Definitely no need to be sorry. I apologize if I sounded harsh. I certainly didn't mean to! My Mom has a very long term medical condition and has to take Calcium. Her doctor is world renound and the informaiton I got about only absorbing 500 mg. of calcium at a time came from my mom via her doctor.

Thanks! I even went and read my paperwork again and it doesn't mention splitting up my Calcium doses. I will try splitting up my calcium chew doses throughout the day.

The paperwork my doc gave me also says only take 500mg at a time. Right now they only recommend for me to do 1000mg of calcium citrate a day, so I eat 2 chewables (250mg each tab) and set my timer on my phone to go off 2 hours later and take the other 2 tabs. I'm guessing if I need the 1500mg/day they'll let me know after they do blood work. And just remember to not take Iron or Calcium within 2 hours of each other. They each block the absorption of the other.

Can you take the Calcium with your Multivitamin??

Only if the multi doesn't have Iron in it. Most do..

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
