New poster to the site here. 3 weeks out and kinda freaking out because I'm not hungry at ALL and the thought of eating anything makes me feel physically ill. I'm not getting anywhere near the required Protein, and have zero energy. I'm a little worried and wondering if any other sleevers out there are familiar with this?

You're not alone. I don't feel physical hunger either and I am two weeks post op today. What I am doing is to actually schedule my meals at times and then take my meals then. I usually do Breakfast between 7 and 8AM, lunch between 11:30 and 12:30 and then dinner around 5:30 to 6PM or so.

Be sure you are getting in enough Protein. Everyone is different on this. Me personally, I am shooting for 70 to 90 grams of Protein right now, and between 80 and 100 ounces of fluids while I am on my liquid phase (for another week, then on to mushies).

I made the mistake of depriving my body this past Saturday and believe me I was tired, cranky and really run down. I won't make that mistake again..

Just remember that the portion of the stomach removed included the glands that produced the hormones that signal hunger. In my case, it was always false hunger. There were times when I could eat 6000 calories in one sitting and still feel a gnawing, starving hunger. I'm 6 days post-op and hardly feel any hunger. I just keep myself on a set schedule by determining everything I'm eating for the day beforehand and then "eat" those things throughout the day. Sometimes I can't drink everything I plan but I always make myself do Protein first. Last night I only drank half of my 10oz no sugar added apple juice bottle. I threw it back on the frig & will finish it today.

Just try little quantities of different things to see what works for you. I've seen some people who stayed on Soups & yogurts for another week cos their stomach wasn't ready for puréed foods yet. Good luck to you! Keep us updated on how you're doing.

Lucky you!!! I never lost my hunger. I keep hoping it will go away. I'm almost 5 mos post op. From what I've read, your appetite will increase as the swelling goes down and healing continues.

I was never hungry in the beginning I was setting my alarm to remind me to eat-- you MUST get in your protein--- drink shakes, make hi pro Jello, pudding and ice pops!

What's up with the Protein?

I was just told to drink enough Water.

And ya ... I dun feel hungry either.

But I do feel the acid reflux~!

Which is why I eat anything really.....

WOW they did not tell you to be sure to get in Protein?? SO important-- here is a link to a meal plan for us that I found online that is similar to the one I got from my NUT .... Google Cornell VSG Diet and the link is probably the second one on the list it is a PDF file ... this is the name of the document:

WTF?!!

Other than a multi-Vitamin (Centrium - Silver), I was told to take fruits and vege followed by protein... & avoid carbs if possible~!

I guess some Dr's have other ideas!! My new favorite snack is edamame! I just throw the steamfresh bag in the micro take out sprinkle with sea salt and garlic povder (or tabasco salt AWESOME) and eat ! YUM!

Those of you feeling heartburn and reflux need a PPI such as Prilosec or Nexium, not Tums! Get on one and watch your life change. You will feel better and it might help with any "hunger" you might be feeling. Even now, two years out, the feeling of acid churning in my belly is EXACTLY like a rumbling hungry tummy.

I only needed my PPI initially for about 3-4 months but some people need them longer. Due to my currently stressful life, I'm on them again, but only one every other day to keep it under control.

You need something to fix the acid problem and treat the symptoms, not only something to treat the symptoms.

As for hunger, set a timer and eat regularly. I'm two years out and attribute my easy maintenance to a high Protein, reasonable carb diet. In loss, you shouldn't avoid carbs entirely. They aren't your enemy - they give you energy and help your moods. Overeating the wrong carbs (junk food!) is your enemy while you're trying to lose. How your body reacts to them is very individual so play around with your diet until you find what helps you feel better and have energy while also losing weight.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
