My surgery is scheduled for July 30th. I was wondering about vacation travels and how soon afterward people were allowed to go. I haven't asked my Dr. about this yet. We were kind of wanting to do a cruise right before school starts for my daughter - leaving August 18th. There is a cruise we could do that we can drive to (port is about an hour from us), but we would prefer to do the one out of FL, which would be a plane ride there (we live in Tx).

Even if we didn't do a cruise, we would be interested in doing something - it would be nice to get away from the heat here. We haven't had a chance to before now because we thought we were going to move across state up until a couple of weeks ago.

Anyway, just wondering how fast you felt like a trip after surgery. I know everyone's different.

Wasn't hard for me to travel three weeks out, but I didn't feel like going on the trip my partner and I had planned. Ended up sucking it up and going... Had a nice time but that soon after surgery your food options are VERY limited... so being stuck on a boat isn't ideal...

I think the traveling part would be fine if your doctor is ok with it. I agree though that with the limited food choices you will have at that time a cruise may not be the best option. I am in Texas and going to San Diego next week. I cannot wait for the 70 degree temps there!

If you do book a trip it might be good to get something refundable or purchase the insurance that allows you to cancel. Just in case you don't feel up to going or in the super rare case you have a complication.

The cruise would be a Disney cruise, and I hear they are very accommodating of special diets. It's not the food I'm worried about. It's more the energy level to do anything.

You'd be, what, 2-3 weeks out? I think you'll be ok - perhaps a *little* sore, and I think my doctor told me not to lift anything heavier than 10 pounds for either 2 or 4 weeks, I can't recall exactly. (I'm 1.5 years out).

You'll be on a liquid only diet at that point, or at best, the 'mushies' phase - all the mashed potatoes, cottage cheese and Soup you can eat at the buffet. :)

Best of luck to you.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
