kate33 1 Posted July 2, 2012 I am currently in the process of researching the band to sleeve revision surgery and am concerned about reflux and it's effects. I have watched many videos featuring interviews with sleeve recipients. In the majority of the videos it appears to me that the majority of the patients have unusual swallowing reflexes, awkwardly pausing while speaking to swallow, cough, or clear the throat. It could just be my eyes playing tricks on me..but I'm wondering if it could be a result of acid reflux? Has anyone noticed or experienced this?
Ms skinniness 3,003 Posted July 2, 2012 No, not really. I am 9 months post op and I have not had any complications. I do have some acid in my stomach, but it is managed by my PPI. No problems.
Marty McSkinnystein 342 Posted July 2, 2012 I think it's when it's right after surgery because the esophagus is swollen still, no?
PdxMan 4,292 Posted July 2, 2012 I had issues with reflux prior to my sleeve, but I also had a hiatal hernia repair during the sleeve surgery. Was taking PPIs almost daily. Now, post sleeve, I have not had any issues. Haven't taken a PPI since surgery, almost one year ago. As far as swallowing issues, imediately post surgery, there is some issues, but there is also a lot of swelling internally, so ... after a couple weeks, all was well in that department. No long term effects at all.

Chimera 644 Posted July 2, 2012 Only during the first week for my husband and I with any issues with swallowing - and I am certain that those were from swelling.
CowgirlJane 14,260 Posted July 3, 2012 I hadn't noticed this on videos. If you go to a sleeve post op support group, you will meet a bunch of sleevers. I have never observed what you are mentioning on longer term patients. I do know that reflux is a MAJOR risk over the longer run. 3-6 years out, the incidence increases. I fear it- but i reconcile it by saying that i would rather be under 200# with reflux then OVER 300# with just less reflux.
PEvette 297 Posted July 4, 2012 The only issue I find myself having post op is that my mouth gets dry quickly, so carrying Water with me everywhere helps with that....I hope it doesnt get worst in the fall...
samomom 19 Posted July 27, 2012 My surgeon created a small flap to prevent heartburn. He does surgeries just for heartburn patients so he knows what he is doing. I had a bad bout of heartburn one night because of an antibiotic. I quit the antibiotic and having had any heartburn at all.
CowgirlJane 14,260 Posted July 27, 2012 So, when I went in for my 6 month, they had me fill out a questionairre and they asked about difficulty swallowing, so perhaps it is one of the possible side effects.
