If You're Worried About Telling People....

Recommended Posts

...they may just surprise you! I felt pretty strongly about not telling much of anyone outside of my very closest friends and immediate family. As I began to go through the classes and jump through the various hoops, the net was cast wider and wider. I didn't exactly rent a billboard, but I definitely told way more people than I intended. I'm still pre-op, so basically, I just sent an email letting them know I'm having surgery, when it is, and simply asked for their prayers and support during the process.

The response has been OVERWHELMINGLY positive. They've all seen me struggle while actively trying to lose weight. Everyone is happy for me and offering all sorts of support. So, yeah, there are plenty of ignorant people who will have ridiculously dumb things to say about our decision but I'm willing to bet that there will be more that will be in your corner and waiting to help and support you in any way they can.

I'm not trying to convince anyone to do anything they don't want. I just know that it was a bit stressful for me to think of all of the judgement and possibly not having the support of those around me. Basically, I was worried for nothing! Just wanted to share.... :)

I have told everyone! My support is amazing!! I work in a dr.'s office (ortho) and my dr.'s have sent me text came to the hospital to see me. I did not want anyone thinking I was sick or was dying. If I ever get negative feedback then I don't need that person. My dad actually told me he thought I should just diet more....i put him in his place saying he is very obese as well. I love that my friends, neighbors, co-workers, my patients and family know. I think it's too much on people's shoulders trying to figure out what to tell people! It is not normal to lose 8 lbs a week unless you have had surgery. I am down 8 lbs and I am only 6 days out. I had to fill out a form at work this AM and everyone was complimenting me on how great I look an they could tell I lost already! What a HUGE confidence builder that was! Again just my experience so it is up to everyone, but I am so happy with my choice!

Thanks for sharing. I have been struggling with this very topic myself and just started Day One of my 2 week preop diet. The idea of just hiding doesn't make much sense if I'm starting a healthier lifestyle.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
