Why Can't You Just Be Happy For Me?

Recommended Posts

I have been approved for my surgery. I have let my co-workers and boss know so that they have enough time to cover my work. I work with several ladies and some are overweight, however, I am the fat one. When the word got out that I was having surgery, the comments were:

Well, what am I going to do now, I'll be the fat one.

I guess I'm going to have to go on a diet now.

I can't believe you are doing this just not to be the fat one.

I tell them that MY surgery has NOTHING to do with THEM!! I really wish they could at least try to be happy for me.

This is the reason I didn't share with co- workers. It's like working with a bunch of teenagers. When I finally go back they will all be making assumptions behind my back but I will enjoy them really not knowing what I had done and it will drive them nuts.

These ladies need to get a grip. Don't let them rain on your parade!

Like you said, you are doing this for YOU! I know that we all want people to accept and be happy for our decision but sometimes that just doesn't happen. That comment was not about you, it's about them. Now that you are going to be healthier and slimmer, they will now have to worry about themselves being as they said "the fat one". It don't matter how healthy you're going to be to them because it's all about them. I'm happy for you and congrats on your surgery date.

It sounds like they're in high school. The key thing is, and you realize this from what you've said, is that you're doing this for you. This will last long after you've moved on from that job, either to another job or into retirement. Good for you for getting the surgery. If they won't be happy for you, I will. :)

Wow.. what a narcissistic bunch you work with. I would just tell them you are doing it for you and its highly presumptive on their part to even think they had anything to do with it. Sorry you have to deal with these people. I know that whatever you say wont be enough and sometimes it feels better to just stay quiet and let them think what they will. I never have the nerve to say anything to rude people either. Maybe you could do a reverse psychology thing on them and say.. Yes, you all are exactly right.. Im tired of being the fat one and so I figured I would pass the torch to yall and live a healthy life from now on. If you have a problem being the fat one, then I suggest you look into ways of solving YOUR weight issues.

Make sure you tell them now that you don't want to be asked when you come back to work how much you lost.

Some people aren't that bright and will expect you to be down 50 pounds by the time you get back to work. Make sure they know it's a slow process, and that you still have have to modify your diet, and change your lifestyle and you didn't gain it in a day and it's not coming off in a day.

Set boundaries now before the surgery.

I didn't tell anyone, but I also had hernia repair and adhesion removal done which was very much needed.

You know what they say about "Misery" she sure does love company. I'm sure once your weight starts falling off and they see how well you are doing maybe you will inspire them to do something about their weight. Anyway do whats good for you and don't worry 'bout who is bothered by it, people will always talk, its when they stop talking that gets me nervous..LOL

Seriously??? You need to find another job! These people don't give a rip about you and apparently they showed their big asses! Or you could stay and let them all be green with envy because you are taking control of your life!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
