I'm 5'6" and my BMI was 36. I was only allowed to have the surgery because of a co-morbidity of diabetes. This is the best thing that I have ever fought for. :)

My BMI to start was 45 and is now 25, but I self-paid. If you have co-morbids you have a better chance of having insurance cover the surgery. Each company is different as far as what they'll cover, and each doctor is different as far as what they'll do. I think it's silly to want us to be heavier so that we can have surgery to be smaller, but sometimes that's how it goes. Search for "lightweights" or the phrase "low BMI" and see what you find. There are many lightweights here, so perhaps you can get advice from one of them before your appointment.

Before my surgery, my bmi was 38. I'm 5'8" and was 245# before starting Pre-op diet. I have no co-morbidities but diabetes, heart problems, high blood pressure & cholesterol all run in my family. I'd been lucky so far but always struggled with my weight. My insurance doesn't cover any bariatic surgeries, even lap band, so I was self pay.

Put some weights on your legs for your weigh in appt. my BMI was 38 but I have some medical issues that qualified me quickly. I have double BCBS insurance and I did not even have a waiting period to get approved. I am getting sleeved on July 9th!!! Good luck

I was only 55 lbs. overweight and BMI of 32. Although all my excess weight was in my abdomen and headed for my heart. My insurance would not pay cuz of the low BMI even though I could have had a heart attack had the pressure of my weight got any closer to my heart. My body fat % was 52% now down to 32%.

Hi! I'm new here. What was everyone's BMI before surgery. I'm going to see a doctor next about this surgery and im afraid he's going to tell me no. I'm 5'7 and weigh 220 BMI 34.

I was sleeved on June 8th. My BMI was a 32. I have lost 25 lbs. I had high sugar, cholesterol, and blood pressure. I was told insurance would not cover me because my BMI wasn't high enough. I had the surgery and paid for it myself. After paying, I received a letter from my insurance company saying they would pay for it. I never even requested that they pay for it. It was a very pleasant surprise. I am sure your doctor won't deny you. Just do everything to get your insurance to cover it. My costs for the preop tests were more expensive than the surgery itself. Have the doctors run everything through insurance. Even if you pay upfront. Insurance covered more than I thought they ever would. . I am still not recovering as quickly as I expected. I had a hiatal Hernia they found and corrected when they got in there. Most of my pain is in the diaphragm area under my ribs. It ranges from slight discomfort to excruciating, and I haven't been able to pinpoint what sets it off. This may be from the hernia. I also can't tolerate the Protein shakes. They come right back up whether I have just a sip or more. Therefore I am struggling with recovery. Good luck, I am told in time that it will have been the best decision I ever made, but right now I am having a few regrets, only because of my problems I have right now. Hopefully you have a smooth process!

33.1 BMI and I am close to your height. I self paid since no comorbidities other than knees hurting. Not going to say everything in journey was perfect, but I had no major complications. Learning the new you is not easy.

Today at almost 2 years out it is easy to say I would travel this way again...over hot coals. I have no regrets and love my sleeve..

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
