One Day Pre-Op On Magnesium Citrate

Recommended Posts

My surgeon only requires a one day pre-op of Clear Liquids and 2 bottles of Magnesium Citrate and of course nothing after midnight.

Anyone else have this? I know they all are different but thought mine was very easy compared to others.

I am going Johns Hopkins and they only require 24 hrs prior to surgery as well.

Honestly, this approach makes sense to me. I mean, I understand the doctors want us to get used to our new diets before we are forced into them by the surgery. But going from high-calorie diet right to a liquid diet with our full size stomachs is totally unrealistic and crazy-making.

I agree with you but I was shocked because of what most everyone on here is going through! I can't imagine how hard it is.

We are getting sleeved because our stomachs are big and stretched and we eat too much because of this, so putting people on a diet that doesn't give them much If any satisfaction isnt setting anyone up to do well on the pre-op diet IMO.

I know they say it's for the liver but idk, they are the Dr's. But why would some Dr's say it's to reduce the size of the liver (not to start changing eating habits or anything like that) when others don't even make their patients do it at all? Is it really that big of a deal then?

Anyway, I'm thrilled that my Dr only requires the 24 hour pre-op diet.

Good Luck!

Johnathan

My doctor bases the length of the pre-op diet on the BMI of the individual. The higher the BMI the longer the pre-op diet. My co-worker was told 10 days and I was told 5-6 days by the same doctor.

I did well for about 2-3 weeks on a seld imposed pre op diet. But let loose the past 9 days lol. Just freaking out, and wanting my faves one last time.

I'm certain I will rock my sleeve though I've got an awesome support network.

Well not at least we know why some are shorter and longer.

I was sleeved 3/5/12 Jlewis 229 and I had almost the samething. I had to eat my last meal at noon the day before an then do the two bottles of magnesium and then nothing but clear fluids until midnight. I did have to follow the south beach diet for about 2 months prior in order to reduce the fat on my liver.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
