I was wondering what your doctor told you to do for post op pain. Were you prescribed narcotic pain meds or did you use over the counter analgesics?

My doc prescribed liquid Tylenel 3 / codeine. I can't do a lot of the heavier pain meds without vomiting. I used it for about two days then switched to just Children's liquid Tylenol, it did fine.

My doctor also prescribed liquid Tylenol 3/codeine. I never needed it. In fact, I was fortunate enough not to need any pain medication.

I am allergic to codeine & derivatives like hydrocodone. I was put on Children's Tylenol which I couldn't get down. He finally allowed me Tylenol pills split.

Your doc should provide you with a prescription pain med, possibly a liquid... there are a number of possibilities. You probably won't need them for more than a day or so. Be careful not to overdo them, they are very constipating and that can be worse than the post-op pain. Don't worry, excessive pain usually is not a major post-op issue. Best of luck!

My nurse said my Dr would give me what my current pain meds were but I'm liquid form which would be oxycodone and methadone but I'm a little different than others because I'm already on Narcotics because of Chronic Pain.

BUT she did tell me at first that they normally prescribe Liquid Hydrocodone for patients. Their is nothing wrong with taking pain meds for legitimate pain and after surgery you have legitimate pain so don't try to tough it out, If you need it, take it. But they do cause Constipation, I can tell you this from YEARS of experience, unfortunately.

Good luck!

Johnathan

Doc sent me home with some Oxycodone. If you're having lots of pain while in the hospital, discuss your at home pain med options with your Doctor on one of his daily visits.

I was prescribed demerol pills that I crushed up and mixed with a bit of Fluid. It tasted terrible though, but did the trick when I needed it.

I was given lortab in liquid form, basically hydrocodone. I only took it 1st night home & I've mainly had tenderness but no pain like right after surgery.

I'm a bit nervous about this. I have gotten everything up to oxycodone and that had no effect on me. I have fibromyalgia and haven't found anything to help with the pain yet...

I would definitely discuss that with your surgeon before surgery. Plus you should have a pain management person at the hospital, or at least I did. She was the PA for the overnight internist who gave me meds for high BP & anti nausea patch. The PA talked to me 3-4 times before discharge about how my pain levels were & how controlled they were, etc. that's when they decided they send me with liquid lortab since I was on IV dilaudid while in hospital.

If you let your surgeon know beforehand about what has & hasnt worked for your FM pain in the past, they'll should take that in consideration & try to get the best pain med that will hopefully work for.

I agree, definitely tell them you have FMS and that your pain isn't managed well right now and tell them what you have tried BUT be open to trying those again bc it's likely it can work on yor surgery pain and not the fibro pain.

I take 15mg Roxicodone 4x day and Methadone 10mg 4x day for Chronic pain and my Dr is just switching mine to liquids BUT these work for me fairly well. Just remember to always be open to trying things when it comes to pain management. I REALLY hope they find you something, I know how it is to hurt so bad.

Good luck!

Thanks guys, I see my surgeon on tuesday so I'll bring it up with him then. I did fill him in a bit the first time I met with him and I was taking an antidepressant called nortriptyline. It helped a little but made me gain tons of weight. And losing weight is more important to me. I can figure out my pain problem later.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
