Would You Do It Again For Just 70 Pounds To Lose?

Recommended Posts

I'm sorry, but, personally, I would not have surgery for 70 lbs. It's just too invasive a procedure (all of them - LAP Band, Sleeve and Bypass) for 70 lbs. I'd get the post-op diet plan and have a go at it w/o surgical intervention.

I would only suggest a WLS for someone with >100 lbs to lose or someone that has a lot of commorbidities making the surgery the best option.

Commorbidities meaning Diabetes, sleep Apnea, Hypertension or past personal history (or extensive family history) of stroke, heart attack or something like that.

In the end it's your personal happiness and health at stake so I would encourage anyone to research thoroughly and make up their own mind.

Hi

I am having difficulty with the 'only 70 pounds' thing. I agree with Mz Elle only to the part where all of these surgeries are invasive and extreme. They are, and anyone who says otherwise is downplaying the risk. As a nurse of almost 30 years I know this. With any surgery comes risk - from the anesthesia, chance of complications - running from minor to life threatening, temporary to permanent. It is not a decision to be made lightly, and certainly not to be made without exploring all of your options and doing extensive research.

Having said that, what do you do when you HAVE tried everything? I have tried many things and different combinations of diet, exercise, herbal preparations etc. but always in the parameters of healthy foods . I currently need to lose about 75 pound to be at my ideal weight. I am currently relatively healthy but I do have mild asthma and high cholesterol, controlled by medication. I know for a fact both of these will at least improve if not disappear if I can lose the excess weight, and I also look at my dear brother who 'only' has to lose about 80 pounds to be at his ideal weight - he has had a heart attack, 2 stent placements, asthma, high cholesterol, severe sleep apnea and non alcoholic fatty liver disease - ALL of these conditions would improve with weight loss. Do I have to wait until I am in the same boat before I do something about it?

No, I am choosing to get the sleeve as a tool in my Quest to get and stay healthy. I am satisfied that I have tried all I can to lose and keep the weight off, and for me it just isn't working. For me it will be worth the risk, and I think everyone needs to look at their own unique situation and decide what is best for them.

I completely agree with you which is why I decided to have the surgery. I started my prep op diet in early August at 195, had surgery on 8/28 at 175 and 3 weeks later I am st 160! This is thR lowest I have been in probably 10 years and I feel greAt. I'm already off cholesterol meds and working on getting my weight down to at least 140. No complications from surgery and even stopped my pain meds on day 2. I feel great!

Agreed! In reality, there's all sorts of reasons why someone would need help with "only" 70 pounds to lose. While I can speak to my own decision to have surgery, I have no insight, and therefore no right to speak about someone else's choice. If I wish to be allowed to make independent and adult decisions for my life, crafting my own happiness, then I sure as heck better extend that same permission to others! ;)

I, for one, am very thankful that the option was available, and now, 55 pounds later, the fatigue due to my MS is way better, and I'm completely off all medications for HBP.

And I'm happy. lol

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
