Migraines And The Sleeve?

Recommended Posts

I Have Migraines. I am nervous about not being able to take those medications for a month before surgery. I am currently on a preventative as well as 3 meds for treatment when I get a Migraine. Does anyone else have these concerns or been through this already? I am hopeful that the number that I have will decrease after surgery.

I too have Migraines and take Topamax as well as prescriptions for break through migraines. My dr said I can take everything except no Motrin (800mg) or any other NSAID for 2 weeks prior to surgery. I can even take it the morning of surgery and they will give it to me at the hospital as well. Did he specifically tell you that you had to go off your meds which can be dangerous depending on what it is?

I take Topomax too and I use Tramadol for fibromyalgia pain and other meds. I was not told to discontinue any meds. I guess I need to call the doctor.

I take a Maxalt for my Migraines. I actually had to take 2 doses during my 3 day hospital stay after being sleeved earlier this month.

I also have degenerative disc disease, so yeah I'm pretty worried about not being able to take my Advil, but so far so good. I tend to take a half dose of vicodeine instead of 3 to 4 Advils when I start feeling the pain.

Tylenol is worthless, unless it's for a fever. Might as well be sugar pills.

I do not knwo what your doctor allow but mine did not want me to take anything the morning of surgery unless it was for blood pressure. My guess is they don't want anything in your stomach when they operate. I was off of my medication for one day. They give your ice chips and sips of gatorade the day after surgery so I was able to take my medication then.

I agree. It can be scary to think of both on top of each other. I have my fingers crossed that neither of us will have to know what that's like but instead will have a Migraine free experience. I am actually hoping that all the changes the sleeve will bring into my life will reduce that amount if Migraines I have.

Me too! Hopefully we will both have less and less. I reconfirmed with the dr that I do have to come off everything but can take treatments meds for a Migraine up till two weeks before surgery. :)

Fortunately, I have not experienced a Migraine since I started my preop diet on June 11, surgery was on June 25. (knock on wood, something, do a dance!) YAY!

Makes me think that my diet may have been the culprit in triggering my migraines! I have also been able to discontinue my B/P medicine.

Hopefully you all will experience relief or reduction of Migraines, at least perhaps a reduction in medication.

Best wishes to all.

~Jane

hello finding Me.

I have Migraines and did not have to stop the medications a month before surgery. In fact I took them up to and day of surgery. I did have to split the dosages to AM and PM with the Migraine meds thats all. And change format of the meds from Capsule to pill form .

My surgeon reported to me that It is UNLIKELY that bariatric surgery will have any effect on my headaches as I have had them since being a teenager.. ( normal sized).

Maybe your diet ws the main contributor to your migraines.. you will find out for sure over time.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
