Hi all...

I had a little setback today and I am trying to work through it. :(

I went to get my clearance from my PCP today and he won't clear me until my A1C comes down. While my rational mind understands that a high A1C puts me at greater risk for infection and possibly a longer healing time, I'm sad and disappointed.

I am having a hard time understanding how my A1C jumped 3 points from March to June. I have been losing fat and gaining muscle during this time. My PCP is working with me to get it back down. The surgeon's office is encouraging me and reassuring me that this is a minor setback. My family is doing the same.

I am just a little discouraged about the outcome today. I know I can't give up, I'm just disappointed today. I though today would be the day we submit to insurance.

Please tell me that someone else has had these little setbacks and things ended up okay in the end. I really need to hear that right now. -_-

Thanks...

I was pre-diabetic prior to surgery, although no meds yet. I didn't have to deal with A1C issues, but it seemed like I just kept getting sent to another doctor and another doctor and another doctor before I finally got my date.

I had an IVC filter installed before and removed after my VSG, so three surgeries. I still say that every single minute of it was worth it!! :)

Thanks for easing my mind some. This A1C thing is the last thing I need to do. I think I can do it. Now I just need to turn words into actions.

Hi,

I have high a A1c, but I take Metformin. I did Atkins shakes for Breakfast and lunch, one evening snack, and a salad with Protein everyday for a month. I tested my A1c on my home kit, and it went down almost a whole point from 7.6 to 6.8 in a month. It hadn't been that low, even on meds in over a year. Try low carb, it'll definitely get your numbers down. Also, if you're going to have carbs, eat them early in the day, so you can burn it off. Good Luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
