Made it home around noon today and got on the scale--gained 9 pounds. Omg. No wonder I'm feeling so bloated.

Yep - that's about what I gained after surgery. 3 weeks later I still feel a bit bloated in the stomach area but I think when you are older everything just takes longer to heal.

Know how you feel! The day after my surgery I had jumped up 10 pounds from all the effects from the surgery. Don't worry though it'll pass. Trust me on that! Welcome to the Loser's Bench!

Welcome home!!!

I gained weight from all the fluids and surgery gas etc etc. It drops off easy.

That's good to know. Between trying to sleep today, and frequent trips to the restroom, I've already lost a couple of those pounds.

I do have a question, though. While in the hospital last night and today, they asked if I had had any bowel movements. I just thought to myself--Really? I had been on liquid diet for two days and then nothing for the surgery. We're they serious? Was I supposed to? When should those functions return?

They do come but everyone is different. I remember my nurse telling us that some will in a day or two and some it will take a week. The anesthesia alone slows everything down plus we are not eating solids so its slowwww

My surgeon said about 3 days after but you should definitely be taking stool softener...she was right I had a bm on day 3 of being home (sorry tmi) it all depends too when you stop taking pain meds because that will keep you bound up...and yes flatulence def counts...I say as long as you feel ok and your stomach doesn't hurt then I don't think you have to worry about when it is going to happen...it will happen when it's time ;)

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
