Hello fellow Sleever's.

I am curious to know of other's reactions to Magnesium Citrate the day before surgery. How long did it take to work your bowels? Did you feel anxious, light headed and have hot flashes? Its been 45 mins since I have drank it and I have not yet had a BM but I am feeling funny. Any tips? Any advice on this subject would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

It takes a while for it to work, but when it does, stay near the bathroom. Everyone responds to it differently, but it will work. Read a book, listen to some music, and just try to take your mind off from it. Your body will let you know when it's time to go. :)

Yes. I would get faint...especially when it started working. I would lay a cool cloth across the back of my neck, close my eyes, and do some deep breathing. That usually did the trick.

It took about 14 hours for the magnesium citrate to really kick in for me. Unfortunately this meant that the first "uh oh" was as I was registering at the hospital. The last (that I was conscious for) was just as they came to get me to take me back to the OR. My entire prep time was spent running between the prep room and the toilet.

I felt a little weird, but more of a queasy feeling. That stuff tasted like someone shoved boiled eggs, salt, and sour into old @ss and let it sit for a few weeks. And I was burping it, which meant I was tasting it all over again. Just having to re-live that taste made me feel off for about an hour.

Oh, I took mine around 3. Around 10 I had one moment in the bathroom, but what came out was more like pure magnesium citrate. No... waste material. The stuff in the morning was ALL waste material. So to speak.

The best I could do was tell my surgteon that if I pooped on the OR table, it was his fault for making me drink that crap. :) Then the nurse promised me that if I pooped on them, they wouldn't tell me about it, and that I wouldn't be the only one (which I already knew).

For me it begins working in about 4 hours. I had to use it for both the pre-op and for my colonoscopy. I never felt faint and never had bad cramps but you do feel the bubbling and you know its gonna kick in any minute.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
