Hi there,

I'm new to this site...at least officially....I've been lurking & reading posts from time to time and a few really great blogs...but feel I need to really get involved and find good support.

So, a little about me. I'm 44, married with a 5 year old son. I've been overweight since my 20's and I have recently made the decision to get the sleeve. I'm pretty nervous about it but also excited. My insurance covers it 100% - as I've already hit my deductable this year. I've met with my surgeon, had the upper gi endoscopy and also had an ultrasound on my gallbladder. No stones in the gallbladder but I do have a mild case of GERD and gastritis. They did biopsys and I do not have any infections or other issues - just an inflamed tummy which should be healed in the next couple of weeks.

I just got a call from my Dr's office and I’m set up for the Psych evaluation and test. What can I expect from that? I also have to schedule my Dietary class. Yikes…but a good Yikes…It’s so real now. I bought a few books that have really helped me to understand this whole thing. I mean, I understand the surgery, but the after part is a little scary. I found what looks like a good cookbook for after and another that’s the mental side of things. I just want to make sure I’m really ready for it…I mean, I want this and feel like I’m ready but gosh, it’s scary and permanent….but everything I’ve read on the boards and heard from my friend and my dr. is that most people don’t regret it….especially when you are losing weight. That’s actually what the dr. told me....He said it can become a good vicious cycle in that you lose weight, then you want to exercise more, then you lose more weight and exercise more, etc.. I really think it will be great next summer to be smaller and healthier to keep up with my son.

Well, that's where my head is at today. As I've read, it's a Journey and this is just the beginning. Thanks for listening! :D

At my psychological evaluation I told the 'shrink' I had been a police officer & he said that I was 'nuts'. The moral to the story is don't take yourself to seriously & be honest (be yourself). Don't try & read anything into the questions.

Good luck to you on your journey & keep us posted.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
