I am scheduled for my first appointment with a nutritionist at Emory Hospital in Atlanta for my insurance company 3 month supervised diet requirement. I wanted to know do I have to complete the 3 month diet first and then schedule an appointment with a surgeon and psychologist or can it be done at the same time?

I have a 6 month diet. I'm doing it all at the same time. My surgeon has a nutritionist on staff who I meet with every month. It's just another thing on the list. Once everything is done they will submit the paperwork.

You need to contact your insurance company. They are the ones who write the rules. You would hate to do something wrong and then end up having to wait ...

Contact them. They will tell you what they need you to do. Document who you talked to. Document everything.

I had to do a 3 month diet for insurance, and honestly I'm SO grateful. It really gave me time to start getting my life in order for surgery!

I was seeing the NUT and Psych at the same time, and did not meet with the surgeon until I had my approval letter from the insurance company. Once I was approved, things moved pretty quickly :)

Good luck! I really encourage you to use this time to prepare :)

I am with Emory in Atlanta too. If you are working with Tracey trust what she says. My insurance company req was 3month diet also. It feels like a long time but its worth the wait. There is so much to learn about this new life.

Really? I heard somewhere there is a $600 program fee that is out of pocket but I can't find that anywhere on the website. Is that true?

I am looking forward to learning everything that I can during this time. My perception of food is out of wack. I find myself thinking I rather starve than think about what I want to eat because I am extremely picky eater.

You are a lot like me. But apart of the reason we gain weight is due to NOT EATING. You will hear it sd over and over this WLS not brain surgey. Eating is very important

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
