I know they say no soda or carbonated drinks, but what's the reasoning behind caffeine? Just wondering.

Especially in the early post-op stages, it's hard to stay hydrated because of swelling in our sleeves. Caffeine is a diuretic and pulls Water out of our system, so it's best to avoid it. Some doctors only require that you avoid it for the first few months (like mine). Others ban caffeine completely. I had such a hard time breaking the diet coke addiction that I avoid caffeine completely. :)

Yeah my doc says that coffee as a caffine source is fine around 6 weeks or more after surgery, providing you are progressing normally through the recovery process. I drink my coffee black, no cream or sugar so he did not have any problems with me planning to resume one to two cups a day.

My doctor approved one cup of coffee a day but no more. Some of his patients have developed ulcers from too much coffee.

Try Crystal Light Citrus Splash or Focus flavor. Has some caffeine in it and no sugar no carbonation! That's my drink of choice !!

The reason I was told for no caffeine is that it is an appetite stimulant and can be abrasive on the gastric system. I too was a diet coke drinker before and while it has been difficult to give up the diet coke, I cannot skip caffeine completely. I don't drink coffee either, I am a tea drinker. I am 9 days out and I have for the past several days had unsweetened iced tea with lemon. I just sip on it and then add more ice when it melts, so it's pretty diluted. Just can't survive without caffeine.

I was a coffee addict, drinking at least 10 cups a day. In the months before surgery, I began cutting down on the coffee. I did it gradually, avoiding the terrible headaches. I am sorely tempted, but have not gone back to my coffee/caffeine habit.
