WLJourneyJ 89 Posted June 28, 2012 Ow strict /long you did pre op liquid diet to recovery time and complications? Seems like some sail through and others have more symptoms ( pain nausea has etc). I also know some people are strict with dirt and others are more lenient pre op. think there is a correlation?
O.T.R. sleever 3,386 Posted June 28, 2012 Nope, my pre-op diet was a total of 48hrs. The 3 or so weeks prior to that I was a total pig, eating anything I wanted and too much of it. My recovery has been a breeze, no pain, no nausea, no problems w/foods I've tried. So I think I probably went into this the worst way possible, & still have had great results. Tori_AKA_Victoria 3 Posted June 28, 2012 I can have nothing to eat but Protein Shakes and Water for a total of 6 weeks { 3 weeks before surgery and 3 weeks after surgery}
skane10 64 Posted June 28, 2012 I followed my pre op diet for 5 days then cheated and ate a regular meal. I was very strict with my 3 days of clears before surgery though and I had one bout of nausea immediately after I had surgery and was walking the hallway. Other than that no nausea and almost zero pain.
buffalogal 52 Posted June 28, 2012 I have been encouraged to try to eat right and exercise leading up to it, and then only have a 3 day clear liquid diet for the last three days. Clear Liquids first week, more liquids, cream Soups, 2nd week, etc. I'm with Kaiser, which has a really good reputation and stake in our success, so I'm pretty confident they know exactly what they are doing. They definitely will want us to hurry up and go home safely. It has been fascinating to see the variations for everyone. I should add that in some extreme cases, people have the liver shrinking diet which is more involved and a long period of time.

There seems to be no rhyme or reason to who does how after surgery. I have been on a liquid diet since the 21st. My surgeon is very strict about it. It's been rough but I'm proud of myself for getting through it and not cheating once. I have not even licked the Peanut Butter off of my finger when i made my kids lunches! I've also really been trying to use some positive visualization that I have an easy recovery.
clk 3,519 Posted June 28, 2012 No, I don't think so. I had no pre-op and a pretty easy recovery. I was off pain pills as soon as I got back home from Mexico. I think a lot of it is simply personal - it's up to your pain tolerance. I do think people that have had major surgery before tend to bounce back more easily, just because they know what to expect. ~Cheri 1 babygirl_sandy reacted to this
TaniaB 37 Posted June 29, 2012 I had no preop diet, and I'm 12 days preop today and doing great... Haven't thrown up or felt nauseated at all, still need a daily nap but who doesn't.... My dr said I don't have to do purée stage as its just like drinking your meals and you will take in more calories than needed... Said its better if you try to eat your regular foods and let your sleeve do the work, you'll get fuller faster but your eating normally.
Mews 37 Posted June 29, 2012 The main reason why docs have you do the pre-op diet is to supposedly shrink the liver before surgery so that way it doesn't get damaged. That being said, I didn't have a pre-op diet but I have had issues since my surgery with nausea and diarrhea. I really don't know if there is a correlation between the two but my doc claims that none of his other patients have the same issues that I have.
