Whoa, Wait A Sec... Hair Loss?

Recommended Posts

Just read at least two different people who experienced large losses of hair post surgery. Is that common? Any way to keep it from happening?

My surgeon said that most people will experience some Hair loss after surgery.

The reason a person might lose hair is that after you're sleeved, your body goes into a kind of "controlled starvation" mode. Your body starts to make decisions as to what it is going to prioritize. You want your body to focus on maintaining muscle mass and to focus on burning fat. Hair growth and maintenance isn't realy that high on your body's list of priorities when you're starving. Of course you don't feel like you're starving because your new stomach is so tiny, and that's the idea.

That said, I have experienced no hair loss yet at 3 weeks post-op. I take two multi-vitamins as directed, get plenty of Protein and Biotin, and avoid harsh Shampoo. You might consider looking into a cleansing conditioner to use the gentlest possible products on your hair.

I'm about 4.5 mos post op. My hair is looking VERY thin & stringy. I've taking Biotin since a couple of weeks before surgery plus tons if other Vitamins. It really sucks because my weightloss hasnt been that great. I pray it starts growing back soon.

I had surgery on 4/24 and I have not noticed any Hair loss, but I monitor my growth carefully. Prior to surgery I began taking a capsule that offered superior levels of silica and Biotin. This supplement is called Longer Stronger hair & Nails, but I also research and found that your body needs Vitamin C in addition to Biotin. I know take 1, 000 mg of Pure Vitamin C by Nature's Bounty. You only need to take one capsule daily (I split my capsule using my pill crusher). If you do not have one you might want to invest in one. By the way I spoke to my Bariactric nutrition support coordinator on today and she reminded me to continue sonsuming between 50-60 daily, which includes my Protein Shakes. She also stated that there hair loss despite what we do as our bodies are going through changes, but the hair will grow back. Thid coordinator had the same surgery one year ago and her hair looks so full and appears to be growing. Biotin 5,000 mcg I have heard is helpful.

I thought I would get lucky and not have any loss! It hit me literally on the three month mark. I took a shower and lost two handfuls.

Well, today I came home with a new chic bob :)

I would rather be thin haired and thin than fat and furry

If your body chooses to shed hair, there's nothing youcan do about it. Protein and Vitamins can help lessen the loss by strengthening hair, but expect that you probably have some loss. It's not permanent.

I lost quite a bit of hair, but I have thick hair anyway- now I just have a normal punt of hair lol.
