Hey everyone,

My last poll about Water seemed to generate some interest, so I thought about it and I thought this would be interesting.....

What do your doctors say about drinking coke?

Mine told me if I HAD to have some, drink it flat at least. He preffers that I drink no coke of course but said flat its ok.

Mine said the same....let it get flat first. I personally have had NO problems with any carbonated drink ever if I sip but I know that some do no matter what. I guess it is a very individualized thing.

I was told no carbonation. I really miss grabbing a diet coke at the drive through... I am too scared it will do something bad to my band or possibly ignite my reflux, which is barely under control. I really miss it but wouldn't drink it flat.

I don't think it is just coke, I think it is any carbonation. I do not drink any ever. I have had about 4 sips in 11 months and it just didn't taste right to me.

I can't understand what all the big fuss is about. I drink diet soda every day, with no problem. Granted, I find drinking it from a cup easier than from the bottle, because it reduces the fizz a little, but that's all. I just had my 4th fill, and no problem.

I'm down 84 pounds in 14 months and still going....

Mine said it is best not to drink it at all, but if I have to, leave it out overnight so it goes flat.

But, to be honest, I quit drinking diet coke when I went on my pre-op diet. I used to drink it for Breakfast, lunch, dinner and everything in between and thought I would go crazy without it. But, I honestly have to say I don't miss it. I am now a Crystal Light addict. The one time I did try drinking a sip of my husband's diet coke, it tasted very unappealing to me, which I was shocked about.

The poll asked what my doc says - which is drink it if you want to (just none in the 4 weeks after banding). However, I don't dare touch carbonation because ONE SIP will give me a stomach ache ALL night! I CANNOT tolerate it at all!!!

Also, I can't stand the way it tastes now. Every now and then I think of sip of soda sounds good and I put it in my mouth and it just tatses like nasty fake fizz and I spit it out. I have truly lost my taste for it.

I am now an iced tea w/ splenda addict!!!

My doctor is a carbonation Nazi. He insists that he has had to do more than one surgery to repair problems caused by carbonated drinks.< /p>

My doctor told me under no circumstances do carbonation, such as pop and beer...

I have recently been craving a coke so bad I was crying. (I have been drinking 3 a day since I was 7.) SO I had a small bit of frozen coke! It made my day I swear! AND no carbonation so no problems! LOL...

Water and Crystal Lite pink lemonade for me, not worth taking the chance for damage over drinking something that will remove acid from a car battery, LOL.

Don't get me wrong, before banding, I had Diet Coke in the veins.

My dr. said try diet drinks and if they don't give me gas go for it...I have no problems downing a diet root beer at any given time. They, however, may change when I have a fill. The only reason he said people can't tolerate carbonation is because it usually causes gas. I've had no problems with it. I also get all my Water and Crystal light in to.

wow it looks like most docs say no coke. I know I shouldn't drink it but i do every once in while. I'm stocking up on crystal light while I'm on vacation to bring back with me.

My doc said that of course coke is not good for anyone because it is loaded with sugar and tons of caffeine...but will it hurt you band ? No. Will it give you extra calories that you dont need? Yes. Will it cause some people discomfort because it is carbonated? Yes.

I do have a regular coke every once in a blue moon. I have had no problems with it....no gas pains or anything. But we all know we are all different.

I was a coke aholic. It was my drug.

Mine said there's no documented proof of pouch dilation (aka slippage) but some docs think a good burp could slip the band. He also suggested giving up sneezing, which is worse than a good burp.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
