I had my VSG one week ago today, and I'm doing well so far!

I had one complication immediately following surgery...a higher level of inflammation than expected (inside my new stomach), which resulted in horrible nausea, vomiting, and acid reflux. My surgeon left my NG tube in several extra days, delaying my discharge, and my advancement to Stage 1 (sips of water). My NG tube was finally removed at the end of day 4 post-op, and I had no issues advancing through to Stage 3 (full liquids) over the next two days. I was released to come home yesterday, and have had no issues since leaving the hospital, other than the typical lack of energy.

I've been able to get plenty of Protein and water/liquids in today, thanks to some wonderful high-protein products, and have opted to skip a couple non-protein/liquid items simply because I'm feeling so full, I couldn't imagine putting a bite in my mouth. All-in-all, I'm feeling pretty good!

As an aside....anyone considering VSG surgery in the Boston/New England area...I would HIGHLY recommend the program at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center!! Dr. Jones is a phenomenal surgeon, as well as an extremely personable character (something I consider a must-have in a doctor). The care I received, once moved to my room, was absolutely stellar. I have never experienced the level of care I received at BIDMC, from every single staff member who cared for me. Also, the level of hands-on, physician-level care provided...24 hours a day...was incredible! I was completely impressed, and can't think of a single negative comment to attach to my experience.

One question....does anyone know of a good stool softener that doesn't taste completely vile?? I've been prescribed liquid Colace, but will not be taking it (yeah....that's the "vile" taste I'm referring to!).

Best of everything, to everyone joining me on this amazing journey!

Glad to hear that you are recovering well now! I take Milk of Magnesia for when I need to have a movement. My Doc has a progression, first try MOM, then try Magnesia Citrate which you can buy at the store, and if that doesn't work go for Miralax. Usually the MOM works for me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
