Best Decision I Have Ever Made

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

My name is Christy. On April 16, 2012 I had a Gastric Verticle Sleeve done. I made my decision to have it done based on the fact that I was 37 years old, a diabetic with sleep apnea and never had the energy to keep up with my 4 children. As a child and a teenager, I was average size and began to put on weight after my first child. I had been "morbidly obese" most of my adult life. I put the words morbidly obese in quotations because I never thought of myself that way until a doctor told me I was. I am 5'7" and weighed just under 300lbs. (298 to be exact). At my heaviest I was 327. Although the number was huge, in the mirror I knew I was fat, but morbidly obese? I had worked as a paramedic for many years and to me "morbidly obese" was the patients who were bed bound or could hardly walk. I was active and could get around just fine, but when the co-morbidities came on like diabetes, I knew they were right. My weight was an issue. Now I am 10 weeks post-op, off of all my medications, 55lbs lighter and feeling amazing. This truely is a life changing event and I can't wait to meet some people on here who have been through it and encourage me with their stories.

Congratulations on your loss and on taking a hold of your life and putting it on the right path, well done you. You will find this site inspiring and so useful for advice.

I was sleeved 3rd April and so far have lost 37lb, weight loss is a bit slower than I hoped but following threads on this site I see people loose at different rates so I am not too unhappy. Today I joined a gym (and paid for the full year) so I have to go now and tone up my jelly belly and the other bits as the weight comes off.

Thank you everyone! Uk Cathy, it is true that weight falls off at a different rate. I went 3 weeks with only losing 2 lbs then all of a sudden I was down 12 in a week. Slow and steady wins the race! Plus, with losing it slower you aren't at risk for certain things like gall stones and such! Keep up the good work and I look forward to hearing more from you. Are there any suggestions on fighting the excess skin?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
