How Often Should I Weight Myself?

Recommended Posts

I had my VSG Tuesday 6/19. I have developed a habit of weighing myself daily. Is this good practice or should I discipline myself to space my weight-in out?

Weighing urself daily has is pro's and con's. When you weigh yourself daily you have type of measuring stick on how well you are doing. The other side is "stalls" when you hit one the scale can be come very upseting. So weigh urself everyday until you stay at the same number for 3days straight then go to once a week until you start losing again...

I have been in a stall for 2 weeks and I weighed daily. It has been a bit discouraging until this morning when I was down 5 lbs overnight. I have been swimming or walking and I used map my walk which stated that I burned almost 500 calories in an hour and ten minutes last night. I think the idea of not weighing every day if your weight hasn't changed in a few days is a good one. In practice for me that is very difficult.

I weigh every day, but I don't let the scale drive me nuts. I know that my weight is going to fluctuate daily and I use it more as a marker to know whether what I'm doing is working than anything else. I love those 5 pound overnight drops, but have to remind myself that it's probably just Water weight.

I worked hard through my pre-approval phase on my diet and lost 70 pounds in 7 months. However, there were days that I gained 2 or 3 pounds and then the next day lost them, and I just dealt with it. It's how you look at it. Stalls and sometimes Water retention happens.

Weighing yourself daily has it's ups and downs, so does weighing yourself weekly. What if the day you decide to weigh yourself is the day that you had an issue with Water retention.

Stalls happen, that's when you take out the tape measurer, and you use your own intuition, is your clothes fitting looser? It's when I don't weigh myself daily that the next day becomes easier not to weigh myself then the next week, then 60 pounds later you are like what the heck happened to me.

If you can't deal with a stall or a one pound increase, then don't weigh yourself once a day. It happens to everyone though and it's really on how well you can deal with the reality that you can weigh yourself 5 times a day and sometimes your weight can fluctuate 1-3 pounds depending on the time of the day.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
