How do you set your weight loss goal?

Recommended Posts

I am on my way to Lap Band Surgery. I had first consult with the Surgeon last week and he said I am a patient made for lap band procedure. My current weight is 295 down from my all time high of 302 almost 3 weeks ago. I am 6 feet plus a little it seems to vary and I am also 62 with diabetes, sleep apnea and some breathing problems probably due to my big stomach.

I would like to set up realistic goals. I am scheduled for a scope of my stomach and a stress test to be cleared for surgery. The Doc says probably will be scheduled in 30 to 60 days.

I think that the more I know about all that is involved the better chance of success. I have in my mind a wish to be able to lose 60 to 90 lbs. Is that realistic.

I am semi desperate as it seems that problems are starting to pile up and I don't want to be a burden to my family.

Pete

I think your goals are VERY realistic. I would talk to my Dr. about weight goals. Your Dr. should be able to let you know what he/she thinks you are capable of.

Best of Luck to you!!!

I have people tell me that my weight loss goals are not realistic, but i know what my body looks like and feels like at the weight goal that I have set. It is all very personal in my opinion. The nice thing is when you get to a weight you can see how you feel, and keep losing if you want to.

Pete,

My advice is to try not to worry about the final goal just yet. The lapband is flexible. If you're willing to do the work, you can lose as much weight as you want -- every bit of the 90 lbs, if you want! But, don't worry about that now. Worry about doing everything you can to have the smoothest surgery and recovery period, and learning everything you can from people who have been successful with the band. That way you have the knowledge to be the most successful bandster out there.

Plus, in about 30 lbs, you're going to start feeling FABULOUS, which is worth the surgery in itself. In about 50 lbs you'll be in a position to narrow down exactly what your final goal is.

I had a lot more to lose than you starting out, but I don't have a final goal just yet. My doctor would like me to lose about 80 more lbs for my health, but certainly doesn't think I'm limited to that amount if I want to take it further. We'll see when I get a bit closer.

Congratulations! This is a very rewarding journey.

I havent been obese all my life, I didnt really put on much weight till after I had babies and hit my 30's. I remember what 75kg looked and felt like, pretty good, but from the brief times I hit 70kg I looked and felt fantastic. So that's what I'm aiming for. Its pretty much in the middle of my healthy weight range.

I believe your long term goal is very realistic but maybe you should start with a short term goal of maybe 10lbs. That's how I have had to do it. If I looked at the big picture I would have never made it but looking at it in small amounts seamed reachable.

I never thought I would lose 103lbs but I did 10lbs at a time. Best wishes on the start of your new life with the band.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
