Caffeine...yay Or Nay Pre Op?

Recommended Posts

I am allowed tea and coffe (unsweetened) but I am not sure about it having to be Decaf? does anyone know for sure? a friend told me it causes hunger, but as I recall (I am a pharmacist) it is an appetite suppressant as well as diuretic. I have googled but don't find anything saying it causes hunger.

It's a diuretic. It can also causes stomach upset. Not sure what your pre-op diet is like. Mine was only 3 shakes a day, sugar-free Jello or sugar-free popsicles and crystal light. There are some people that actually got some food and suffered. Pre-op diet - during caffeine withdrawal - is a double whammy.

Take my advise and quit the caffiene now. (I LOVED my coffee). I switched to decaff then when I realized decaff was going to be hard on me after the sleeve, I decided to switch to decaff Bigelow Peppermint Tea with Truvia. Best decision I made (I say it almost every chance I get). The most soothing, calming thing after surgery was the Peppermint tea. It was easy to go down warm (ask nurse for a styrofoam cup) and I truly think it was what helped me be able to handle the Water. It actually tasted great though it cooled off during the night and it helped me train myself to be able to handle cooler Water. Some people have issues with cold water after surgery. I made it in the morning and then before bed - but I drank it all day with my water. It has been my saving grace during my hospital stay til today.

Unfortunately, in the hospital when the tray comes they usually give you a cup of hot water, served in a coffee cup with a side of generic sugar-free sugar packet and the hot water tastes and smells like coffee and is gross.

You are not allowed coffee after surgery because of the diuretic effect. Dehydration is one of the worst things that can happen to you after surgery, and coffee is hard on your sleeve. I have tried decaff about 1-1/2 weeks after surgery and it made me sick to my stomach.

Thanks. Guess I will make the switch right now. I am 9 days pre op. I haven't had a soft drink in 8 days so I will get through it if I can get through that. :0)

I quit all caffeine before the surgery because I thought that I didn't want to be battling a caffeine headache at the same time I was trying to learn how to eat differently.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
