Hi, everyone!

I had my VSG on June 6th, and so far, so good! I'm in DC, and had it done by Dr. Daniel Tran at Howard University Hospital. He, and the rest of the staff were absolutely stellar, so if anyone on here is having surgery coming up with them, you're in good hands. :) I haven't had any side effects like the nausea and GERD everyone promised, although I definitely overdid it with straining myself, because my lowest belly stitch is very painful inside me. You feel so 'okay' afterwards that you forget you've had surgery! I'm so happy that I'm off the liquids and onto the pureed now...two weeks before and two weeks after was too much. I ate a cottage cheese as my first 'meal' and felt like I was in heaven. Sad, but true.

About me, a bit : I'm 36, a DC area native (for real, we do exist), and I'm an executive secretary for the FBI. I've been obese since birth, basically, except for approximately 6 months in the 7th grade where I grew 4 inches and wore a size 9. It was glorious. Barring that, I have epilepsy and take medicines which keep a lot of weight on me, but I also love to eat huge portions, and that's why the VSG was great for me. I decided against the RNY when I saw my coworker get sick from taking a Sudafed because of the sugar coating. The whole dumping syndrome is really unattractive.

I'm getting used to my new stomach, and I really would like to stop overeating on accident, but I suppose that will come in time. Meanwhile, I'm in love with The World According To Eggface and all her recipes, and need to make Protein shake ice cream ASAP. I'm on the hunt for new recipes for pureed foods, because I miss cooking!

I weighed 368 pounds at one point in my life, and lost a lot with Weight Watchers...but can't keep it off. I don't know why I didn't get VSG sooner. Love.

And that's me!

June 6 - what a great day to be sleeved ;) I can tell you are happy

Glad your recovery went so well, and your happy to finally be on purees, and soon solids :)

cottage cheese first meal - nothing wrong with that, i'm a big fan. I love the cottage cheese mixed w/pineapple container. Verified with NUT first and she gave her blessing. it is definitely um um good :)

Living in DC and working with FBI, pretty cool

you can find lots of recipes on board, different areas on 'puter.

World according to eggface is a popular site - many others too

take care newbie

welcome to the neighborhood

continued success

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
