Good morning everyone,

i had my surgery on 6/21/12, I did great. The second day I went home. I got home and ate 1/2 of the Jello packet and took two sips of coffee. I started spitting up for almost three hours...it was foamy too. Today, I'm wicked sore in all areas; stomach, and throat. What did I do wrong?

Now, I'm coughing and it hurts. I'm doing the breathing machine (no meds)

Help!

Thanks,

Did you drink real coffee? I have been told to NEVER drink coffee again. It could cause an ulcer and is extremely bad for the stomach.

Your stomach was cut, cauterized and stapled and it needs to heal. You should only be trying to get in liquids right now like Water, perhaps Isopure (some clear protein), you can have decaff tea (I recommend Bigelow Peppermint Decaff tea).

Make sure it's sugar free Jello too. Start out in the morning with just getting your Water, medicine, etc. down. If you are on a ppi make sure you take that in the morning. I am waiting to get back on my normal stuff, but right now the doctor has me on pepsid.

Even decaff coffee was too hard on my tummy after a week out and I decided I'm done with coffee for good. Maybe in a year I'll try an Ice Decaff coffee, but for now I'm sticking with something that is soothing and healing on the tummy and that's decaff Peppermint tea. If you hate peppermint, get a variety of decaff until you find one that is refreshing and healing on your belly.

Oh yeah another question....were you giving the one ounce med cups to drink out of? I still find I take it a lot less air drinking out of small one ounce plastic little cups, I sip, sip, sip (takes 3 sips) to finish one ounce cup. I have less air going into my esophagus and stomach that way. I honestly am not enjoying drinking out of a water bottle anymore because I pull in too much air which makes it uncomfortable.

I was also told it takes at least a month for the inside of the stomach to heal.

Good luck to you, and remember just take it slow.

Ya it might have been a bit soon for coffee. I was served Decaf in the hospital and my doc said after a week or two I could have one cup of real coffee per day thereafter. I was only able to handle a sip or two at first. Your tastes and tolerances change a little after surgery.

Thank you for the reply's. I will take that advise. Also, did you all start Vitamins on week 2 or the first week of surgery? The hospital gave me liquid, but my nutrionist gave me chewable for week 2.

After my surgery I will have to take two chewables a day for a year than after than one a day. Im sure after a few months they don't have to be a chewable unless I prefer that.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
