Help..severe Heartburn Any Suggestions?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am about 7 weeks out from surgery. I am having horrible heartburn. I am allergic to ALL proton pump inhibitors. Prilosec ect... I have been taking pepcid but I either throw it back up or it just dont work. I found some tums extra in my cabinet can I take these?

Does anyone out here in sleeve world have any suggestion that can help me. I am so miserable. The doctor gave me carafate. Which coats the stomach dont see where it is much good either.

Any help would be appreciated : )

Gas X? I know we are allowed to have it with the sleeve. I don't know if it will solve your problem.

I take Tums twice a day for Calcium, bonus is the acid inhibitor in them. You had a clot too, right? Ask your doc about pantoprazole. It's apparently the only acid reducer that doesn't interact with coumadin. I'm still taking the pantoprazole, even though I'm off the coumadin.

Another quick heartburn solution that I learned while pregnant (eons ago) is to take about a 1/8 teaspoon of baking soda (the stuff in your fridge) and mix it into 1/4 cup of Water. It tastes nasty, but it's effective. Hold your nose and drink it and the heartburn should be gone quickly. It's high sodium, so don't do it often.

Good luck!

Tums should be fine. I'm pretty sure they are just pure Calcium. I take them (or their equivalent) frequently.

Try Gaviscon not the store brand, it really work, I had horrible Heartburn during my pregnancy it was the only thing that work. Also after taking any antacids try not to drink Water for 20-30 min ,That way it allows it to coat and work. When you drink water it just washes it away therefore you lose the effect.

I took some tums when I needed them. Also don't drink/eat right before you lay down, that helps a lot.
