Need Usa Sleeve Surgeon Advice Asap...

Recommended Posts

So, I was all set to go to Mexico for surgery next month and then one of my sister's friends went down for the same procedure and did not come back. I know, I know- the odds and lots of other things- but to say that this has caused a family freak-out is an understatement. SO- rather than turn this into an all out "sh8t show" I have agreed to look into options in the US.

Here is the problem- I am 100% self pay and the Drs I have spoken to in the NYC area have said that they don't do gastric sleeve for self-pay patients- only the lap band (which I don't want- I can't get my head around having a foreign object into my body AND I have very stubborn PCOS and have heard that the resopnse from the sleeve is better than the band).

Does anyone know of a US based surgeon who will do the sleeve for people self paying?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can provide.

I know my surgeon's office accepts self-pay. Do you have insurance and are choosing not to use it or they won't approve the surgery? If you do then I don't see why they have a problem. Insurance would cover anything catastrophic right? So that would be a safety net the surgeon too. I dunno. It doesn't make sense why they won't.

I'm in Florida though, and that is pretty far from NYC. Have you tried Jersey or PA. My surgeon used to have a practice in the virginia/dc area. I believe the practice is still there under his father, maybe they will accept self-pay patients.

I've never heard of a sleeve surgeon refusing to work on a self-pay patient. They get more money out of self pays than insurance, so if anything I'd think it would be the other way around. Odd! Regardless, my surgeon does self pay. $11,999.00. I got insurance approval, but if I hadn't I would have self-paid for him to do my sleeve. Being able to use my surgeon of choice is far more important to me than saving a few thousand $$$. Not to mention the convenience of being 45 mins away.

My surgeon takes self pay, in fact, she perfers it, bc she gets more $$$ and doesn't have to do all the paper work. :)

My surgeon does self-pay. Wasn't cheap, but he was worth it! He has really remarkably low complication rates.

Dr Yancey, Chesapeake Bariatric in Chesapeake Virginia. The practice has a payment plan you can set up for Self Pay. Had my sleeve in March and love my Dr and all the office staff.

Dr. Ducheine in west orange... My brother in law and uncle used him

Dr.ducheine was my surgeon and I had no problems at all.. I was sleeve on may 21,2012! One thing I can say is dr. Ducheine has very good staff in his office and his surgery team made sure I was ok.. to be honest I really didn't have no pain just a lil stiffness for being in that hospital bed.. overall dr.ducheine is a man of his word when he say you going to be ok..

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
