I_Sd8_em 28 Posted June 21, 2012 Just read a study that shows decreases in fat, lean body mass and bone mass with sleeve gastrectomy. With Ghrelin reduced ~80% with VSG. With increases o Ghrelin via injections it resolved weight loss and lean mass loss but not bone loss and they have found no treatment for the bone loss. I wonder if since ghrelin reduces HGH if HGH injections would help with the loss of lean body mass and bone mass without the fat gain. Anyone 6+ months out been having bone scans? You should likely get a base line to check every year or 2. But I would like to hear from those that have checked into it. Thanks http://search.yahoo.com/r/_ylt=A0oG7likh.NPwAcAvxtXNyoA;_ylu=X3oDMTE1Zm83MDRtBHNlYwNzcgRwb3MDNQRjb2xvA2FjMgR2dGlkA1NNRTEwNl8xOTM-/SIG=128ubnaec/EXP=1340340260/**http%3a//www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1774616/
emily_0192010 168 Posted June 21, 2012 I wasn't aware of the bone mass issues with this surgery. Thanks for bringing it up! I'm planning on adding it to my list of questions for my next appointment.
Foxbins 625 Posted June 22, 2012 I had a DXA scan in August 2010, 5 months before my sleeve, and again in August 2011, seven months after. Overall, I lost 3.6% of my trochanter mass in that year, partly due to the fact that I'm a post-menopausal, sedentary woman not taking HRT. I boosted my exercise and now run about 15 miles a week and take supplemental Calcium (as I have since surgery). Frankly, I'll take the bone loss compared to the risks I was going to run by remaining obese and continuing to gain. It's not something I'm terribly worried about, although I may change my mind if I start having fractures.
I_Sd8_em 28 Posted June 22, 2012 Well it's just something to keep in mind for those in the decision making stage and to watch for those already sleeved.
vsginnj 415 Posted June 22, 2012 Read that and thank you , so glad that now if I break a hip I can say bone density issue and the 20 or so miles a week I am running . Not because I am a 330 pound 45 year old man who can't climb a flight of stairs. Still can't believe what an amazing gift this surgery was. What a sick addiction, worry about what might hurt us as we die of obesity !
I_Sd8_em 28 Posted June 22, 2012 Yeah vsginnj, I don't think you should worry. Just stay informed to the research and updates. That way one can catch things early and prevent it while getting the weight off. One must choose the healthiest route for a quality longevity.
