$2,000. Copay...do You Have To Pay It All Upfront?

Recommended Posts

I have a $2,000 copay that needs to be payed to the surgeon. I can't seem to get a straight answer on this, but I was wondering if the entire amount has to be paid before surgery? I know every place is different but do they usually make you pay the whole thing or could I put say $500 down? My insurance is really good and will pay for the surgery 100%, but I don't have $2000....should I wait until I have $2000 saved up before I go any further with appointments, etc. ???

The only person who can answer this definitely is the insurance coordinator in your doctor's office. I met my deductible but then owed a 20% coinsurance. They asked for it up front and I was able to pay. If the hospital also wants 20%, I'll ask for a payment paln. They will often work with you but you'll need to ask first. Good luck!

Either your insurance coordinator, or the accounting department - accounting is going to be more familiar with whether or not they will arrange somethign with you.

Why do they cover the surgery in full and not your doctor? If you chose another doctor would you have less to pay?

You might be suprised at how much you can come up with quickly...figure out how much you can pay the doctor, by what date - and then ask if they can arrange for the rest.

There are more ways to get this than any one of us realize...anything from ebay to yard sales to cutting off cable and not eating out, to a card that is 0% within so many months. Not my idea but one young lady moved back with her parents for an agreed upon time, the difference in rent is her surgery! I sold a kidney!

Ok..I didn't sell a kidney...

Your employer! I meant to mention this - if you are an employee in good standing your employer might consider paying it. You just have to ask.

i had 500 bucks to pay until i met the 80/20 ratio. so i had to pay the surgoens office 500 before surgery. the only person who can give you that answer would be your surgeons office. if you need to pay that much im sure they would try some type of payment plan. who has 2000 dollars just sitting around ? Call your doctors office they should be able to let you know what is needed up front. all together i payed about 3500 for my surgery. best money i ever spent.

First I would check if the copay had to be paid to the surgeon or the facility. Then who ever you have to pay it to, it is really upto them. Every facility/doctor is different.
