Confused About Having Solids With Soup

Recommended Posts

Can we have something solid to eat along with say a broth or Tomato Soup? The no liquid with food has me questioning if I shouldn't have anything solid with my Soup. Is this okay?

How far out are you? I starting adding mushies to Soup (soft tofu, cooked mushrooms, very cooked asparagus) at about 4 weeks out. But not in the first 2 weeks post-op. Now, I eat Soups all the time. Preferably, you still want to limit HOW MUCH liquid makes up the soup and count it towards your meal. For example, I can eat about 4-5oz of solids comfortably now, so when I have soup I try to estimate that solids (chicken, veggies, etc.) make up about 3oz and the broth is about 2-3oz. If it's a heartier soup like a low-fat clam chowder, then I can usually only do about 4oz.

Remember to chew the solids!

I was actually told "NO SOUPS!" At all! LOL. My surgeon wanted me to follow low-carb, high Protein. So even during my liquids stage I had to stay away from soups... at that point I pretty much only did Water and Protein drinks.

Now that I am 9 months out... I would not chose to have Soup because mixing solids and liquids hurts my sleevie. And it causes me to have hiccoughs.

Also, unlike lessofme.... I can only eat 2-3 oz of anything solid at a time... so that really limits the amount of Protein I can eat at one time. I simply don't have room for any extra liquids. I have to really focus in order to get my protein and Water in.

I can only eat about an ounce of solids at one time but at this point it seems to get stuck or feel stuck so I have been heating a small amount of soup with it to help. Im not consuming more than an ounce of soup if that along with an ounce of solid. But that being said, my weightloss has stalled and I started thinking "maybe the soup isn't a good idea?" ... There is so much to learn, just trying to make sure what I'm doing is okay with my new sleeve.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
