Beware:bowel Movement Question!

Recommended Posts

I’m nearly 15 weeks out and things couldn’t be better, but……..I have a bowel movement question. Yeah I know the topic is disgusting, so for those with a squeamish stomach, read no further.

I am neither constipated nor have diarrhea. Instead my stools are very sticky, pasty and messy. They always leave “crayola marks” in the toilet. This is my only complaint following my sleeve. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do or is anyone experiencing the same issue.

Oh yeah, I do have that issue at times. I'm not sure what to do and am looking for some answers also. I have used Colace but worry about diarrhea and getting dehydrated. I wake up every am feeling somewhat dehydrated. I get in more than 64 oz of Fluid in the day. Would like any suggestions for this problem also. ;)

I found Fiber to help - and also less starch. The better hydrated I am, the less this is a problem.

I think this is a fiber issue, but I also admit I am not experienced yet as I was just sleeved last week. I have had yucky BMs from the gatorade and it's disgusting. It's just like you describe - but I can't add fiber yet! Can you add berries to a smoothie to help with that? Do you take any extra fiber now?

No one has said this specifically, but I would avoid berries and any type of husk, etc, till you can add fiber of another sort. I would think you could end up with a diberticulitis issue...

Early on, I used citrucel caplets, cut them into maybe 4 pieces for easy swallowing. Later, the caplets are no problem to swallow whole. I think citrucel is a good fiber supplement. I also like metamucil Cookies, they come in 2 flavors.

I think I need to bulk up (harden) the stools. Wouldn't fiber make them looser (softer)?

No! Fiber bulks up the stool too!

It's not advisable to add berries to your diet due to the seeds getting trapped in you stapleline and causing infections. :)

That depends on how far out you are. I know Blackberry on here eats a lot of them. I'm too soon post op tho!

Saw my dr and nut today and the poop issue came up. I haven't gone in 2 weeks. They told me add metamucil or benefiber to EVERY drink even after I go to keep things moving.

My surgery was almost canceled because I had dark stools. Attached is a color chart for your poop. http://www.puristat.com/constipation/bowelcolor.aspx?gclid=CI35xp_2ybACFQhahwodSiImZQ

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
