Recommended Posts

Hey just as an FYI a few of us have a mini support group for those sleeved between June and July - you're welcome to join if you want. Let me know and I will get you the info next time we meet. Not everyone is with our doctor ut it helps to see everything people have been told and it has helped me through this ALOT!

i too am very scared about being able to do the 2 week pre op diet. We are only allowed to choose between 2 kinds of "meal replacement" shakes, and powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury smells funky to me, so I will have to go with Bariatric Advantage. How are you doing?

I am not one to start drama either, but I also think that people who have not been through the experiences yet, should not be the ones judging or giving advice. There are plenty of people here to be supportive, so please do not get discouraged by the people who pipe in with opinions and don't know what they are talking about.

Huh' date=' weird. But for the best.

He's easily one of the most competent surgeons in the Midwest, if not the nation. You made a good choice. You might want to give Nancy or Dr. Sabapathy a call. Nancy might be able to help you with some tips to feel fuller, and Dr. S can suggest some methods to make it not so intense, mentally. It really is 99% mental. Before I got fat I was a fairly serious athlete and I know that's a chiche in sports & life in general, but it is true.

I'm in KC, if the tempation gets too bad shoot me an email and I can come slap you around a bit. <img src='http://www.bariatricpal.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />

I THINK AFTER SURGERY IT IS DIFFERANT RIGHT NOW ARE TUMMYS ARE NORMAL SIZE AND WANTS TO BE FULL. I BELIEVE I CAN STICK TO liquid AFTER SURGERY BECAUSE OF MY NEW SMALLER TUMMY.

This is exactly what I am concerned about. Thank you for this post. I expect to have surgery around the beginning of September. I am going through a 3 month supervised diet right now that my surgeon requires. I do have a 2 week pre-op that will be partially liquid with one meal, kinda reminds me of that old slimfast commercial! I know how much of a B*&^tch I can be when I am hungry. I have started substituting 1 meal a day with a Protein shake. My hope is that when I get there, it won't be as much of a shock. Maybe this is just hopeful thinking, who knows?

One concern is that I will be sick of the shakes when I really need to drink them! Hang in there, I have a strong feeling this will all pass and be worth it! Best wishes-

I am at the same point in my journey as you are right now. I have Dr Hoen with the same surgery date as you; July 2nd! This liquid diet has been very hard. I have found that the sugar free Jello and beef/chicken broth has been my savior when I truly feel I need to eat. I do better at work where I can just sit at my desk vs being home with the family where food is everywhere!!! I go see Dr Hoen today and I am so going to ask if I can have 1 last meal before surgery!!! lol

After I drink the shakes I am full but boy oh boy do I want some real food; and not to mention the shakes are not good at ALL!

Just think....we only have 1 week to go, continue to be strong!!! Good luck and I hope everything goes well with surgery.

After one week, I cheated once, but it wasn't too bad. I didn't go out for pizza or anything, just had a couple spoon fulls of Beans. I can not think of anything I have done in my life that was more difficult than this, but it is half way over now. distractions are the best thing to keep you honest, and making sure you drink your shakes before you get too hungry,

we are having a very similar experiance. I also have my final pre-opp appointment with the doc this afternoon. i may have to ask him about a final meal too. My surgery is at 11:00 on the 2nd, so i would imagine you are before me; try not to wear him out too much for mine. :)

Luckily crunch can be pretty easy while still maintaining low carb & high Protein. Ask Nancy if you can have some turkey pepperoni. If you can, microwave it on some paper towels until it's thoroughly cooked - it will darken slightly and not sizzle as much. While still hot, blot the grease off the top. Let them cool and they will be extremely crunchy & tasty. You can eat them as-is, or as a chip/scoop. I like them to scoop cottage cheese, or garden vegetable cream cheese -- but I'm also 3 mos post-op. :)

Per serving (17 slices):

70 calories

4g fat

1.5g sat fat (I don't know if blotting the grease/cooking reduces the fat - I would guess cooking does at least a bit)

40mg cholesterol

640mg sodium

0g carbohydrates

9g Protein

You can also make a crunchy "cracker' out of baked parmesan - the grated kind, not the powdery pizza stuff. Just make small piles of about 1 tbl on a baking sheet lined with parchment or a silicone mat/silpat. Once you have the piles made, use the bottom of a glass to "squish" the cheese as flat as you can get it. Bake at 300 until brown & bubbly - this takes about 10 mins in my oven. They're gooey when they come out but let them cool completely and they will get really crunchy. When I was doing Atkins several years ago, I used to make taco shells this way. They're really good and versatile!

Whole Foods also carries a few versions of the crackers above, but theirs have higher carbs and are more dense - the ones above come out fairly thin. I can't remember what they're called but I have some at home & can take a pic of the packaging if it would be useful.

I live in NE MO, about 10 mins from the airport but I work near the OP/Olathe area. If you guys have any questions about anything please feel free to message me.

I am on July 2nd and I have done ok. I stupidly dipped some chicken in ranch last night before my wife pointed out the obvious that that was a No no. Only a couple of dips though. Nancy the nutrionist told me I could have some healthy Proteins, which has helped, but I would love something that had some crunch to it.

Have you tried "doctoring" your shakes up? Does he have you guys using the Bariatric fusion ones still? When I had my band with him the pre-op diet was 2 days of sugar free liquids, and maybe since I was a revision he just had me do the same before my sleeve, so I'm not completely sure what his other pre-op diets look like now.

If you can add SF ingredients, try some of the DaVinci or Torani syrups. They really make all the difference in the world. Or you can try some PB2 (if allowed). I buy mine online, but the best local selection I've found is at World Market in Westport (for the syrups) and Price Chopper usually has the PB2.

To chocolate Protein try adding:

PB2 and a squirt of SF PB Syrup - tastes reasonably close to a peanut butter/chocolate treat.

SF Khalua syrup, and blend with ice - nice "mudslide".

SF Salted Caramel syrup - just yum.

To vanilla Protein try adding:

PB2, a squit of SF PB syrup, and a squirt of SF strawberry syrup - PBJ. :)

A squirt of SF White chocolate syrup, and a squirt of SF Cookie Dough syrup. White chocolate cookie.

Low sugar OJ (if you can have it), half packet of Splenda, tsp of SF vanilla pudding, blend with ice - orange julius.

^ not sure how those taste when blended with Water, I use skim extra milk. If you can't make those additions now, they might still help for the first several weeks post-op before you're able to get all your protein in through regular foods.

After I drink the shakes I am full but boy oh boy do I want some real food; and not to mention the shakes are not good at ALL!

Luckily I am just on a 1 week pre-op diet. Credit to everyone doing longer as it's driving me crazy. I even went to work at the weekend to keep me busy rather than be at home near the fridge! My surgeon has me on a week of fat free yoghurt and Unlimited cups of bovril (not sure if you have this in America, but it's like beef stock to drink). I did add baked Beans for the first 4 days too as I was allowed them on my pre op diet for the band (although they weren't on the list for this surgery).

I am so tired and have no energy as well as a lot of headaches.

I wish you luck, it's really tough. Maybe you can call and ask if there is something solid you can add too.

All the best x

I am scheduled for surgery on June 28th and have been on my 10 day high Protein liquid diet for one week now and it's hell! I am a carb junkie so it's been extremely difficult, the shakes do nothing for my hunger. I have cheated a little and felt bad but I was so hungry it was effecting my energy and brain! I have been on mostly high protein liquids the whole time but I have eaten a little and I refuse to beat myself up about it because I have to have energy--I work 2 jobs and have 3 children. I have just tried to make healthy choices when I do need to eat something. Can't wait til after surgery when I won't actually be so hungry. My advice is just do your best and don't beat yourself up : )

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
