What Will Happen If I Don't Follow The 2 Week Preopp Diet?

Dr. Hoehn has you on a 2 week pre-op diet? Can I ask your BMI?

He has done both my WLS surgeries (2006 & 2012), and a few non-WLS surgeries too. Both WLS required 2 day pre-op diets of sugar free liquids. I didn't even know he used 2 week diets. He never used to.

My BMI is about 54 and the diet is for shrinking my liver. I carry almost all of my fat around my middle, and i guess that is the most difficult body type to do the opperation on.

I didn't intend on that sounding harsh, and I'm sorry if it came across that way. Just wanted to point out the realities of the situation. I am also pre op, but for me, I am willing to do whatever it takes and follow the doctor's orders to the letter to do this right. Is it really worth the chance of having to miss out on surgery and have to do it again anyway? I am not trying to step on toes or make anyone mad, just trying to make a very important point.

Huh, weird. But for the best.

He's easily one of the most competent surgeons in the Midwest, if not the nation. You made a good choice. You might want to give Nancy or Dr. Sabapathy a call. Nancy might be able to help you with some tips to feel fuller, and Dr. S can suggest some methods to make it not so intense, mentally. It really is 99% mental. Before I got fat I was a fairly serious athlete and I know that's a chiche in sports & life in general, but it is true.

I'm in KC, if the tempation gets too bad shoot me an email and I can come slap you around a bit. ;)

My question is this: If you can't make the two week pre-op, are you really ready for the change of life that will come after surgery? Don't forget. That you will be on liquids for a while after surgery. And at that point if you cheat, it could be disasterous. The pre op diets are meant for a physical and a medical reason. Yes, but they also serve a higher purpose in helping us break the food addiction that got us all here in the first place.

I can actually have more three days after the surgery than I can now. Plus I will be resting then, and not moving around a lot like I was at work. Yes, I am addicted to food, it is my crack. And yes i wanted very badly to cheat last night. Talk to me after you are on the liquid diet and then you will see how difficult it is. Anyway I made it through, without eating anything that my nutirionilist said I couldn't. I joined this board looking for support, not judgement, so please keep that in mind the next time you consider replying to a question from me.

This is a lifelong committment. And fortunately most folks don't suffer hunger anymore or as much. I am not one of those people. I am freakin' hungry, was week one and am still hungry at week 14. However, I am losing weight rapidly because I am committed and follow the rules. I might have lost anyway had I not been committed and followed the rules... but I like to take credit when I can :-)

Stick with it... when you start to see results, it suddenly becomes a lot easier!

Thanks (wo)man, I think I got through the worst of it last night, ended up punching a hole in the wall, but at least I didn't cave and go have Taco Bell. Nancy told me i can eat some meat, as long as their is very little fat and carbs, so that is helpful.

it is nice to hear from someone that has used the same doc, thanks for your replies!!

I'm sorry if it came across that I was being judgemental: again, that was not my intent. I do know what a liquid diet is like: I've done my share. So I do know how hard it is. My point was that eating what you're not instructed to could mess things up for you in the long run. I AM being supportive, sometimes support comes in ways that we don't necessarily want to hear. Success at this is a very big deal. I am glad that you checked with your doc and nut and that they gave you great information. Good luck in your journey.

This is a good like at how individual each person's experience is. Some people have no problem with the pre-op diet, and some really struggle. Some make it, some don't. If your liver is not sufficiently shrunk, surgery may be cancelled or converted to an open procedure. Some surgeons have no pre-op diet, some have minor, some are weeks & weeks.

I think the previous posters meant well - "if you can't follow the rules for two weeks how will you follow the rules forever?" and it's a good question in a metacognitive kind of way, but it really is comparing apples to oranges. That absence of a fundus, presence of scar tissue, incessant full sensation, etc. really change the game.

Well, I'm committed and following the rules, and am NOT losing weight rapidly. So maybe it's a combination of rules and committment, or maybe it's luck, or metabolism, or who knows. The beauty of a procedure like this is that it is not a one size fits all solution.

Wheetsin, didn't mean to imply that those not losing rapidly aren't committed and following the rules! As I said, I like to take credit when I can!

But now that you mention it, I did have a metabolic rate test pre-op, and I came out on the super-human end of the scale. Now, that's a good thing post-op, but it also points out that I really had to work hard to pack on that extra 100 pounds. Shame on me.

No worries at all, the experience is completely different for everyone. I'm just highlighting the uniqueness that someone pre-op may not yet be expecting (like "always hungry" vs. "never hungry"). And like vomiting! :) I actually expected to me sick all the time, horrid heartburn, etc. Haven't been sick once, and only moderate heartburn when I forget my PPI. You just never know.

You really want to get that liver shrunk..you can do it! :) They put you on a diet like that for a reason and think how disappointed you will be in yourself if you cheated....just sayin..

I'm worried about mine it's 3 week pre op diet 3 weeks of just Protein Shakes the last time I was on a all liquid diet was 39 years ago and I'm 40 now! I know it's going to be hard but I'm ready to give it my best shot.

Bigdogkc .... I am proud of you for recognizing your issue, posting it here: asking for advice, then posting the next day that you made it through another night..

I was there: committed to the surgery but still going through so much mentally during pre-op it didn't seem do-able .... But i did it, as you are... We made it through...

It is ok to feel the way you did, it is ok to vent your frustrations...

not one (1) of us will be perfect every day of pre-op or post-op ...we will flub up...but .... we remember tomorrow is another day, to try harder, to feel more confident, and to smile when we realize "we CAN do this"..

I have Dr Hoehn too, my surgery is in one week. I am on my 2 week diet and well, some days are better then others.

I have been very strict over the last couple of days and plan to be 100% for the next week and we will see. I plan to be honest with him and let himknow on Monday when I see hm how I did. If he has to postpone the surgery then better that then the worst happen.

It is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO hard,yes I am committed - every stage of this is new, I am better prepared this week because I know what caused me to fall - I hope I can still have surgery but we will see.

dont mean to steal your thread just wanted to say I know how you feel and it is hard,..I wish you the best even betterthen I did!!

I am on July 2nd and I have done ok. I stupidly dipped some chicken in ranch last night before my wife pointed out the obvious that that was a No no. Only a couple of dips though. Nancy the nutrionist told me I could have some healthy Proteins, which has helped, but I would love something that had some crunch to it.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
