Why Sleeve Va Bypss?

Recommended Posts

It's curious as to why everyone picked sleeve vs

Roux

X

Bypass? I'm

At a seminar

And they are explaining the differences.

Made me wonder why everyone picked it :)

I didn't want:

  • malabsorption
  • dumping (guaranteed)
  • rerouting
  • pouch dilation
  • malnutrition
  • weight regain

I'll gladly give all that up if it means I need to take a little ownership for what I put in my mouth.

for me i was wanting the LapBand but after talking with the doctor it wasn't the right fit for me..(BMI being over 50..he said that losing 100lbs with the band, i would still be obese/overweight so he didnt reccommend that) so that left me with the sleeve and the bypass and i didnt want anything bypassed so thats how i came to want the sleeve..

I initially went in to learn about the band, but I travel internationally for work and was told that A: after being on a flight over 5-6 hrs you sometimes have to do all liquids for a few days because of decompression (had never thought of this) and B: if there is an issue and the band needs to be adjusted or there is some kind of emergency it can be extremely difficult to find a competent Dr. In some countries. So there we were with surgery options and for me I was more comfortable with the sleeve because it seems less extreme and safer (less disruption with what nature intended!) I also have a friend who did the full bypass and she has a lot of dumping and malabsorption issues - is also now anemic. My friend who had the sleeve done, all she says it that she wishes she had done it sooner.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
