Hi everyone,

I'm almost a week out from surgery and was wondering about acid reflux. Other than during pregnancy, I've not had a problem with it but I know that it can be an issue following surgery.

If you've dealt with this, when following surgery does it typically start to become a problem? I know that everyone is different, but I'm just wondering if this might be something I should look out for.

Thanks!

I'm 5 days out and no acid either. My surgeon fixed my hiatal hernia and has me on two doses of prilosec per day for the first two months. I had horrible acid pre-surgery and have had none post surgery. Hoping it stays this way.

Mine didn't start until about a month out. I take Zantac 150 daily and keep Tumms on hand.. It's the only side effect that I have had.

I do take a PPI (omeprazole) 2 times a day for acid reflux and gas. For the first 6 weeks after surgery, I was alway's hungry and that's when I realized that I had acid relux. I started taking omeprazole and the hunger went away. Now when I feel hungry, I know that it's time to drink some Water. :) I can't distinguish when I'm hungry or thristy now. :(. But I am getting better at it, and I totally love my Sleeve! :)

I am on a acid reducer for the first 6 months...and I do notice it when I forget to take it. I woke up in the middle of the night with horrible acid reflux...I almost felt like I was choking and then it is hard to get that taste out of your mouth...pretty gross.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
