Surgery In The Morning And I'm Not Ready!

Recommended Posts

So, I have to be at the hospital at 5:30 am for surgery and all of a sudden I have gotten so nervous. I can't move out the bed. I need to clean my house, pack a bag for the hospital, etc... But I can't seem to grasp that tomorrow is the "Day". I keep thinking "what if I die during surgery"..."what if I go thru this and don't lose 1 pound" "what if that egg white I ate during my pre op liquid diet will delay surgery"??

I haven't told many people that I'm having this surgery so I can't really call and express my concerns with alot of people.

I was extremely nervous, too! Even when they rolled me into the surgery room, I was thinking "you can still back out, you can still out!". So glad that I didn't. Best thing i did for myself!

I was on the fence even as they rolled me into surgery. As soon as I woke up there was zero concern. If I backed out then I would have to return to my yo yo dieting that really depressed me.

It's normal to feel that way. Get out of bed, get your bags packed, find your favorite song and play it, I had my favorite song playing in my head from the time I got up the morning of surgery and it played in my head after I woke up and that was the Theme from Sanford & Son. Tomorrow will be 2 weeks out for me and I had complications, I have Lupus, I got an infected drain, and I still hear Sanford & Son Theme song playing in my head. It's worth it. I still hurt a bit, if I think I have to fart, I head for the bathroom, I still can't lay on my side, I have gone 27 days without eating solid food, and I'd do it again. Get up and get motivated.

The best thing you can do for yourself today, is keep busy! Every time I thought about it, I got really nervous too. Sometimes I was almost paralized like you are feeling right now. You will not die on the table, I ate a piece of pizza during the first day of the liquid phase and all still went well (yes I spent a night panicing about that too). I later found out from my surgeon's nurse that many people are very bad about the pre-op diet. It's not a good idea, but it's a reality. If the worst you have done was eat and egg, you will be OKAY! Just make sure you are on Clear Liquids only today and NPO at the time they gave you. You will lose weight after surgery. It's a law of numbers. I could never lose weight on a "diet" and feared the same thing. I am two weeks post op and have lost 27 lbs between the pre-op diet and the post op. The day I went into the hospital, I had some serious thoughts of running right back out. I cried when I had to leave my mom to go by myself to the pre-op area. BUT it was all OKAY. The nurses will be super nice. Everyone's job there is to make sure you make it through this safely and without incident. They will give you nice relaxing meds when you get in there. Next thing you know, you are waking up from surgery like nothing happened! People told me this, but I did not believe it until I experienced it. YOU CAN DO THIS!! I will keep you in my prayers for some courage and strenght, a safe surgery and a quick recovery!

What you are feeling is absolutely normal - everyone is scared they won't wake up, but a significant majority of people do. Once they give you the good stuff, you won't have a care in the world. Have faith in yourself and your medical team, you're about to start an exciting new chapter of your life !!! Take it one step at a time - you'll do great. :)

Where in Dallas? I'm tomorrow as well at Baylor. I'm not sure why but I'm very calm today. I've done all my chores and to do's. About to watch movie with hub. Sipping chicken broth and waiting for ducolax to kick in. Good luck. remember tomorrow is "the first day of the rest of our lives."

Yep, it's normal to feel that way! Two nights before surgery, I was about 50% sure I'd back out. I posted on another forum and asked for help and when I woke up the next morning, I had all kinds of reassurance, and I felt better from there on in. Also, I kept going over all the reasons I NEEDED a sleeve. We're human, surgery is scary, it's normal! Best of luck to you and all the others being sleeved this coming week!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
