I have to be honest here... Within the last 6 months of researching WLS I have to say at some point or another I have felt that there were good qualities of each type of surgery- and at some point I was very confused as to which surgery would be good for my situation. At first I Was all about the DS- most powerful weight loss surgery, quickest loss, most likely the best option to keep that weight off forever. Then I started to feel very uncomfortable with re routing the intestins- and the Vitamin deficiencies that often cause havoc in years post op. I then came across a article where they actually stumbled upon the VSG by accident because some surgeons were performing the DS two fold. The sleeve first then after the patient would lose significant weight the second part (the switch- re routing the intestines) was done. What was interesting is that patients were actually losing plenty of weight during the first half of surgery and not needing the second phase done- creating the VSG surgery as a stand alone WLS.

I guess my question is- did anyone regret just doing the sleeve- or seriously consider the DS as an surgery option? I wonder what effect the switch really has on long term weight loss and if the risk is worth the lifetime of supplements, bowel issues, and malabsorption conditions patients are sure to have. Any thoughts????

I'm confused as to what the ds is? I also did plenty of research and was initially slated for the rny because I thought that was the only one my insurance covered, but when i found out it covered the sleeve too I did my research and made my decision based on that. I'm so glad I decided to go with VSG, because for me and my lifestyle it really was the best option.

Sorry here is a little more info on the DS:

The duodenal switch (DS) procedure, also known as biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch or gastric reduction duodenal switch, is a weight loss surgery procedure that is composed of a restrictive and a malabsorptive aspect.

Basically it combines a sleeve with a bypass.

I for one like you can't seem to decide between the bypass and sleeve!! And I only have a few days left to decide...

My weight loss is going great! I started pre op at 278, this morning I was 203. I've been bobbing back and forth between 203 and 206 for about 3 weeks now but even still, 75lbs is a lot to lose in 5 months so I have no complaints. I can eat whatever I want, in smaller quantities of course, but i typically stick to the Protein first rule and stay away from carbs.

Emily

Malabsorption is one of the reasons I chose the sleeve over any other WLS. I take a lot of medication and there must be no question that my meds are properly going through my system.

Since this is the sleeve board, i can safely say most everyone here is happy and glad they had the sleeve done over any other WLS. There are exceptions of course.

As far as "the DS being the fastest most powerful, not sure about that...." I'm a believer that slow and steady wins the race", and all those other cliche' that I can't think of :(but on the other hand we all lose weight at our own speed, we're all different, not good or bad.

Good luck on your decision

hope we see you in sleeveland

kathy

My surgeon actually went over the ds option said not many do it anymore because the other options out there are so much better than ds... Keep looking into all of your options!!

Good to know! I work in a hospital and it's quite a popular procedure here. I think I just need to trust my instinct and go with the sleeve.

My mom had the DS about ten years ago and her answer is "Yes! The risks and side effects ARE worth it!" She also said if she had the option back then to do the vertical sleeve knowing the results would be similar w less side effects she would have done the sleeve.

From what I know, the DS is harder on your body.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
