Waiting To Go Swimming?

Recommended Posts

Hi. I had my surgery on Tuesday, June 5. I know the nurse had told me prior to surgery that I need to wait 2 weeks in order to go in a pool or the ocean. If 2 weeks is Tuesday, think it's ok to go into the ocean on Monday, one day shy?

Any thoughts??

It depends on if your incisions are healed with no scabs. My doctor said most people take 2-3 weeks.

Only 2 weeks? Wow. That seems really quick to me. The general rule of thumb is 6 weeks, to allow time for your incisions to fully heal. It also depends on whether or not you had a drain in. That can take a little longer to heal. If your wounds are healed up, I'd say go for it - but if you still have steri-strips on your incisions, it's a definate no go. The last thing you want is an internal infection from swimming too early. Good luck!

I was released to swim in the ocean, lake or chlorine at my 2 week visit......my incisions were completely healed though!

I had to wait until my incisions were completely healed. That was about 4 weeks for me. There should be no scabs & scars should be flat & shiny pink.

I wouldn't chance it before as you could get an infection.

I was cleared at 2 weeks for swimming and took the oppertunity to hop in my pool and do some exercise with minimal impact!

My doc gave me the OK at 3 weeks when all my incisions were closed. If you're just getting wet, should be fine. But remember that standing in moving Water, bracing for waves, picking yourself up can use your abdominals muscles more than you realize. I'd be more concerned with overdoing it or pulling something. Stay safe!!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
