Tomatoes - Realistically?

Recommended Posts

I'm getting sleeved on July 10th. We planted a huge garden this year, including 22 heirloom Tomato plants. Realistically, is there any chance that I will be able to eat any of them? They'll probably be ready to eat around the beginning of August, but they're indeterminate and will produce until frost (I'm in northern Illinois, so October). So, 3 months out from my surgery.

they might make a good sauce? I don't really consider them really tough foods like...say chicken. I mean when sliced they're fairly mushy. I bet you have a fair chance, you probably just won't be able to eat a lot of them. Post surgery folk would know better.

3 months out, you should be able to eat some Tomato, either sliced or as a sauce. I ate tomato sauce during my mushy stage in Egg Face's Lasagna bites. Of course, one can of tomato sauce (6 oz) lasts me 3 or 4 servings now. So, you won't be doing volume on them anytime soon. :)

I'm definitely planning to make lots of sauce, Soups, etc... and I've read that you can freeze them.

I've been eating tomatoes regularly once I started solids phase. Just be careful with the skin.

You could always "can" them yourself. They sell small canning jars.

I having been eating tomatoes since week 5 without problems. They are so good! I might even eat them to much. I will slice some up with my Protein of chicken, fish or steak and I know your always supposed to eat protein first but I always sneak in a little Tomato. The only probs I have are I don't like the way eggs feel some times and chicken that is not moist enough. Oh and Water first thing in the morning almost makes me gag. But that could be psycological lol. I am about 8 1/2 weeks out and down 63 lbs since surgery. Love the sleeve : )

Tomatoes are acidic, but if you are using a PPI and can tolerate it, you should have little problem with them. As noted before, sometimes I have to spit out the skins if they don't go down. But that is not big deal. Tomatoes are just like candy to me, so I pop the little cherry tomatoes when they are available. Kathe

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
