Pre-Op Appointment - Asked To Drop 25Lbs Before Surgery!

Recommended Posts

I am having revision surgery somewhere between July and August - Waiting for Actual surgery date. Had my pre-op appointment this afternoon and Dr. would like to see me at 280, yup wants me to loose 25lbs!!

he put me on a MINIMUM of 3 week liquid diet (with a lean cuisine for dinner) prior to surgery but would love it if I did more. My surgery could be in 1 month or in 2 depending on what is available, I should have my date next week.

I'm in full freak out mode because I had a VERY hard time with any Protein drinks with my band haven't even begun to try any yet. I'm so nervous!!! I will take any "liquid" diet suggestions!!!

I have a great support team - my amazing boyfriend even offered to do the diet with me!! Work is awesome, Friends and Family are all super supportive... I just I just need to support myself. This is all to assist in recovery!!

TIA!!!

The good news is that 25 pounds is *usually* easy to drop as the initial loss is mostly happening by making your body tap into it's glycogen stores. By switching from carbs to Protein for energy, your body will tap into the stores that are Water soluble. So once you use them, the Water weight usually goes with it. That's why a lot of people see the scale move, but don't immediately see it or feel it. It will be hard work on your part to convert to Protein and no/less carbs though. But what your doctor is really going for is shrinking your liver and pancreas by putting them on "vacation" from processing carbs and hormones all day. That will make it easier to get to your stomach at surgery time.

I agree with Benjammin, the focus is ridding carbs and upping the protein. Whether it's liquid or solids pre-surgery shouldn't matter, but I think that's part two of the doctor's goal. They want you to get used to what you'll be on for a while after surgery, get to know what flavors you like, etc. so it's not a total shock to your system when you're in recovery. They ask you to aim for the stars hoping you'll at least get to the moon (i.e. asking for 25 pounds, but it's OK if you hit 15 or 20).

You'll do great!

I have been trying out lots of Protein Drinks, I have found for me the Body by Vi shakes to taste the best. You can add whatever flavor you want to fit your taste for the day, the only downfall is that the Protein is soy protein not whey protein isolate, but hey, it's protein and it tastes good. Best of luck.

Thank you all so much. I went to GMC with my bf yesterday and tasted their lean shake and it was tolerable. I might add a little sugar free pudding mix aslo. I'm upping my liquid intake and doing pretty well so far (its only been two days) as soon as I have my surgery date I will start the diet. Small glitch with the ins Co. The may require me a 6mo plan prior to approval. Will know next week. I though they had already approved it..mix up at my Dr. Office.

The awesome new is my amazing bf and our housemate have offered to do the 3 week pre-op with me. They are better people than I am...I don't want to do it at all..lol

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
