:heh: how do you decide what your goal weight is??

is it a personal preference or did your doctor tell you what a good weight was?

thanks for the help!

For myself, I know I look and feel best at around 70kg (154lb). I'm 5ft 10.

I dont have a particularly large lean body mass, I'm not a muscular person, so I dont need more weight than that. It falls pretty much in the middle of my my ideal weight range.

However, I'm not focussed on that weight. If I dont get to it and maintain say 75kg instead, well so be it. ITs a lot better than 113!

The doc put my goal weight @ 217.. My goal is 200 lbs ( My weight when I was in the Army).

Given my higher BMI, my doctor just said "let's get you under 200." In my adult life, I've been as small as 175, which put me at a size 12-14. If I could get there again, that would be great. Maybe when I get there, I'll want to be smaller. Who knows. I'm going with my Dr.'s goal for now, then I'll readjust if I want to.

I know I will never be what I was in highschool again, and that is ok. I told my doctor I would like to be somewhere between 140 and 150 and he said for my height and age, that was very reasonable. However, at this point, for me, anything under 200 will be a victory.

I set my goal based upon the weight I had previously been the most comfortable at. I lost a lot of weight in high school and got down to 165 and was told by my doctor to gain weight (I am VERY big boned and at 165 my collar bones were showing). But I would be just as happy if I could just get under 200 and stay there.

I set my goal based on how I looked before the weight gain.

135lbs is reasonable for me but if I really want to be extremely fit with like 4% body fat on my big boned, short height, 125lbs is good.

Your funny!! big boned- short! who cares your beautiful!!

4%?!!! for a female thats low- you'll need some testerone. Dont want a mustache to go with big boned!!? not to mention other things.... we'll have to call you 'butters' from southpark "balls on chin". :biggrin1:

My dr said, his goal was to get me at 165 but my own goal is 145-150. I am fluctuating 175-180. I am very close to both goals.

I picked my own goal, I decided on 140 because it is exactly half of my highest weight. I was 165 when I was in high school and I was a size 14/16. I thought I was fat then, now I'd be thrilled to get there again.

My doctor said 160 lbs for me to be in the healthy BMI range. I am 10 lbs from that now, and I know I won't be happy. I want to lose more, probably be in 140-150 range.

I think it's where you feel most comfortable at.

Mine's a BMI of 27. I don't want to be super-thin. I want to meet goal then hopefully lose down to a 25 BMI over the next year or so but no big deal if I don't.

It's more important to me that I be able to consistently wear in Large/14/16 in the regular misses department of clothing stores.

Shortly after I joined this forum, someone posted the question "what is your goal weight?" Lots of people replied with their different personal goals. At one point, an experienced bandster posted that she remembered what it was like during the pre-band/recently banded period. She said that at some point as you approach whatever your goal is, you realize that you had no idea what your ideal weight is or how you would look at that weight.

Now that I have been banded for a few months, I understand what she was talking about. For me, being thin is like going to Disneyland. I went there a loooooong time ago and it was great. I have lots of good memories about it. If were to go back today, it would still be great, but it wouldn't be exactly the same Disneyland I visited all those years ago.

I would looooove to be 125 pounds. I would be so happy, I'd probably have to be sedated. But at 5'7" I'm pretty sure the lowest I'm physically capable of (without fasting) is probably 135-140. Some days I think that 165 is probably good enough. Other days I think "well hell, if I can go from 266 to 165, why can't I go from 266 to 130?"

So I'm keeping an open mind. Yes, I have a number in my head, but mostly I'm aiming to be in the middle of the healthy BMI range and wearing a size less than 14.

To answer the original question, the decision about my goal weight is mine and mine only. My doctor has nothing to do with it. If she were to give me a goal weight, I'd ignore it and stick with what I've decided on my own.

My doctor feels a successful weight lost for any bandester is 66% of their body fat. To date I have lost way beyond that so I am considered successful in their eyesite.

For me, I would like to be 175lbs. I started out just wanting to get at 200 but I knew that would not be enough so I set a goal of 180. Now that I am 1lb from that, I feel I could stand another 5lbs but that will be all. That 5lbs. will put me in the normal category for my height.

Who would have thunk I would ever get on the scale and it not say over 200lbs.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
