Raising Calorie Intake To Break A Stall

Recommended Posts

I've read in several posts that some people actually need to increase their calorie intake in order to break a stall. Seems counterintuitive to, can someone explain?

Your body goes into starvation mode...the only way to break that stall is to trick your body into thinking it is recieving enough caloric intake....It works don't ask me how but it does....I was in a stall for a week not even 1 oz. lost and I asked the doc, he said increase my calories by 100 and sure enough the next day I was 2 lbs. down....CRAZY body

When you dont have enough calories your body goes into starvation mode, slowing your metabolism and burning the calories very slowly. Upping the calories kicks your metabolism back up thus burning calories faster and starting weight loss again. It does work...I change up my calories regularly.

Sometimes it's not even necessarily "starvation mode" so to speak, but is just your body used to the same amount of calories each day. My surgeon told one patient to alternate between 800 calories one day & 900 the next & back and forth so her body didn't get used to exactly the same amount each day. Sometimes even changing your nutrients - like increasing Protein and lowering carbs for a day or two can make the body lose weight again. One lady I know that is fairly close to her goal & was working out a lot every day was told by her trainer to limit herself to 3 times a week & she lost 8 lbs in a week!

Sometimes it's very interesting the things we need to do to make our bodies do what we want them to do! More than anything, we need to be willing to try different things and also be patient. I do weekly measurements too because the scale does not tell the whole story. I've had a few times when I've been the same weight for a few days in a row, but I've lost inches when I do my inches every week.

Yep, the reasons above are why. I have had to do it a few times. I was at 600 calls a day for a long time after surgery. Then I went like 2 weeks without dropping a pound and was so tired, so upped my calories to 800, next thing I new I was dropping weight again and fast. Did 800 for a couple of months, and weight loss stalled on me (I had upped my activity as well so I new I needed more calories). So thats what I did, I went up to 1000 which I am currently doing, some days its 950-975 but I have started losing again, and have hit my goal. Mind you now that I hit it I want more lol. I figure 1000 calories will last me until I am in maintenance and then I am upping to 1200. But at 1000, if I find I go a few days without losing anything, I shake up the calories and do 800 one day, 1100 the next, then 900, and back to my 1000 and it seems to work.
